The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, then he said: "Jihad in the path of Allah." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you!" He said: "Jihad in the path of Allah is a good thing, but adopt with people the conduct over which (a person) has more control than this." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Fasting and giving charity?" He said: "Fasting and giving charity are also good things, but adopt with people the conduct over which (a person) has more control than this." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever speaks a great deal, his slips are many; whoever's slips are many, his sins are many; and whoever's sins are many, Hell is more deserving of him. Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should speak good or else remain silent."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain contains weak narrators who have been declared trustworthy.

The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Stop! How do you know that he is a martyr? Perhaps he used to speak about things that did not concern him, and to be miserly with things (the spending of which) would have caused him no loss.'"
