Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out. He was travelling on his mount, and his Companions were with him; none of them would go ahead of him. Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I pray to Allah Almighty that He makes our day (of death) come before your day. But if something happens, though may Allah not show us that day, which deeds should we carry out after you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, then he said: "Jihad in the path of Allah." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you!" He said: "Jihad in the path of Allah is a good thing, but adopt with people the conduct over which (a person) has more control than this." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Fasting and giving charity?" He said: "Fasting and giving charity are also good things, but adopt with people the conduct over which (a person) has more control than this." (The narrator says:) Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned every good deed he knew of, and each time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying: "Adopt with people the conduct over which (a person) has more control than this." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "'Adopt with people the conduct over which (a person) has more control than this' (what is meant by it?)" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his mouth and said: "Remaining silent, except that (speaking of) good is a different matter." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Will we be taken to account for what our tongues speak?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) on the thigh and then said: "May your mother lose you!" He said whatever Allah willed him to say, and then he said: "People will be thrown face down into Hell on their noses only because of what their tongues have spoken. Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent from evil. Speak good and you will gain; remain silent from evil and you will be safe."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Amr bin Malik al-Janbi, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
