Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 18156

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Is everything we speak recorded against us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May your mother lose you! People will be thrown face down into Hell on their noses only because of (the words of) their tongues. As long as you remain silent you will remain safe, and when you speak, it will be recorded either in your favour or against you." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Tirmidhi recorded it in abridged form, with these words: "As long as you remain silent you will remain safe" through to the end of the narration.
Al-Tabarani recorded it with two chains, and the narrators of one of them are thiqat (trustworthy).
