Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When we were returning from the expedition of Hudaybiyah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Who will keep guard over us tonight? Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: I will. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You will fall asleep. Then he asked again: Who will keep guard over us today? I said: I will. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You will fall asleep. Then he asked again: Who will keep guard over us tonight? I said: I will. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You will fall asleep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this several times, and I kept saying: O Messenger of Allah! I will do it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then you do it. The narrator says: I stayed awake for these people until, when the time of true dawn drew near, (sleep) came over me as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said, for he had said: You will fall asleep. So I fell asleep, until the heat of the sun woke us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed ablution just as he used to perform it before, and offered the two rak'ahs of Fajr; then he led us in the Fajr prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said: Had Allah Almighty willed that you not sleep through this prayer, you would not have slept through it; but He willed that this ruling be established for those after you. So whoever sleeps or forgets, the ruling for him will be the same. The narrator says: Then the she-camel of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people's camels scattered here and there. The people went out in search of them and brought back their camels, but the she-camel of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Go and catch it over there. I caught it at the place the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had told me about, and I found that its rein had become entangled in a tree, and it could only be freed by a hand. The narrator says: I brought the she-camel to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! By the One who sent you with the truth, I found its rein entangled in a tree, and it could only be freed by a hand. The narrator says: Then Surah al-Fath was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say that another narration from this Companion is reported, which Abu Dawud recorded, and it is other than this one.
Imam Ahmad, Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it in abridged form; its chain contains Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah al-Mas'udi, who suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) at the end of his life.

Hadith Takhrij «
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Bazzar also recorded this narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He narrates: We were returning from Hudaybiyah with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he mentioned that they camped on a stretch of sandy ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Who will keep guard over us? Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I will. After this the narrator mentioned the hadith as before.
The narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy, and al-Mas'udi is not in its chain.

رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَرِجَالُ أَحْمَدَ ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyiduna Dhu Mikhbar (may Allah be pleased with him), a man from Abyssinia who used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. On the return journey the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was travelling quickly; he used to do so because provisions would have run low. A man said to him: O Prophet of Allah, the people have fallen behind you. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped, and those with him stopped too, until the rest of the people caught up with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: Would you like us to rest for a little while, or for whoever wishes to take a nap to take a nap? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted, and the rest of the people also made camp. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Who will keep watch over us tonight? I said: I will, may Allah make me your ransom. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) handed me the rein of his she-camel and said: Take this, and do not become a child (that is, do not fall asleep). The narrator says: I took the rein of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) she-camel and the rein of my own she-camel, moved a short distance away and sat down. I let the two of them go to graze and was watching them, when meanwhile sleep overcame me too, and I was aware of nothing until I felt the heat of the sun on my face. I woke up and looked right and left, and I saw both she-camels not far away. I took hold of the rein of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) she-camel and the rein of my own she-camel and came to the person closest to me, and woke him. I asked: Have you people prayed? He replied: No. Then people began waking one another, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also woke. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O Bilal, is there water in the water-skin? Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, may Allah make me your ransom. Then he brought the water for ablution to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed an ablution by which even the dust was not fully moistened. Then he ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called the adhan. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and offered two rak'ahs before the morning prayer, and he did not offer them in haste. Then he ordered him, and he called the iqamah for the prayer, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the prayer without haste. A man said: O Prophet of Allah! Have we been negligent? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. Allah Almighty had taken our souls; when He returned those souls to us, we offered the prayer. The author says: Imam Abu Dawud recorded a part of this narration.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it, and the narrators of Imam Ahmad are "thiqat (trustworthy)".

Sayyiduna Dhu Mikhbar (may Allah be pleased with him), the nephew of the Negus (al-Najashi), narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on an expedition. The people travelled through the night, then they made camp. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and said: O Dhu Mikhbar. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Here I am, and happiness is attained through you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the head of my she-camel and said: Sit here, and do not become a child tonight (that is, do not fall asleep). So I held the she-camel's head; then my eyes closed and I fell asleep. The she-camel slipped away and left, and I woke only because of the heat of the sun. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and said: O Dhu Mikhbar. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Here I am, and happiness can be attained through you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah, last night you did become a child, just as I told you. Then we moved away from that place, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer. When he completed the prayer, he prayed that the she-camel be returned, and winds came driving it along. When the next day came, as soon as true dawn broke, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called the adhan; then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him, and he called the iqamah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer. When he had completed the prayer, he said: This is our prayer of yesterday. Then he offered that day's prayer afresh. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded a part of this narration.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains al-Abbas bin Abdul Rahman. Dawud bin Abi Hind narrated from him, and I have not found anyone else narrating from this narrator; he himself narrated hadiths from a group of the Companions.

رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once, during a journey, we were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to lean to one side on his mount (that is, he had fallen asleep). I held him up, and he woke. The narrator says: Then we kept travelling. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again began leaning to one side from his mount, so I held him up and he woke. He said: Is that Abu Qatadah? I said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: May Allah Almighty protect you as you have protected us tonight. Then he said: I think we are putting you to hardship; turn aside with us from the main road. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made his mount kneel, then each of us made his mount kneel, then each of us used the leg of his mount as a pillow (and we all fell asleep). We did not wake until the sun had risen bright. The narrator says: He mentioned the call of the shrike (surad). The narrator says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! We are ruined; our prayer has been missed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are not ruined, and your prayer has not been missed. The prayer is missed by one who is awake; it is not missed by one who is asleep. Is there any water? The narrator says: I brought him a vessel with water in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, then handed the vessel to me with some water left in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take care of it, for something will soon come to light concerning it. Then he ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called the adhan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, then offered two rak'ahs; then he moved from that place, then he ordered him, and Sayyiduna Bilal called the iqamah for the prayer, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the morning prayer. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If the people obey Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Umar, they will be gentle with themselves and will do right; and if the people oppose the two of them, they will harm themselves. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) missing, they said to the people: Stay by the water until morning comes. The people did not listen to the two of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached these people in the last part of the day, by which time they were close to perishing from thirst. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! We are perishing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for the water vessel, which was a little larger than a cup and smaller than a large bowl. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began pouring water from this vessel and the people began drinking, until all of them had drunk. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called out loudly: Is there anyone else to take some? Then he returned the vessel, and it had as much water in it as before. The narrator says: We asked the Companion: How many of you were there? He told us: Including Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), we were eighty men, and there were twelve men with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The author says: This narration is reported in the "Sahih" in abridged form.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih".

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey. He made camp at night (and everyone fell asleep), and they woke because of the sunlight. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called the adhan, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered two rak'ahs. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Nothing of the world and what is in it pleases me as much. The narrator says: He meant that this is so because of the concession.
Imam Ahmad and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it; however, Abu Ya'la transmitted these words: The world would not please me in exchange for it. Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat also recorded it. Imam Ahmad recorded it from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, from a man, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), while Imam Abu Ya'la, Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, from Tamim bin Salamah, from Masruq, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). The narrators of Imam Abu Ya'la are "thiqat (trustworthy)".

Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at night. In the last part of the night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had us halt to rest (and we fell asleep). When we woke up, the sun had already risen. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Move on, move on!" So we moved on until, when the sun was at the middle of the sky, he dismounted. He commanded Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called the adhan. Each one of us offered two rak'ahs (that is, the sunnah), then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer. We said: "O Messenger of Allah! Should we repeat it tomorrow at its proper time?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has forbidden us usury (riba); would He then accept it (usury) from us?"
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded it in abridged form. Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Kathir bin Yahya, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the Battle of Tabuk, he travelled through the night, and shortly before dawn he halted. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal, guard the time of the prayer for us." He said: "Very well, O Messenger of Allah!" Sleep overcame Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) as well and he too fell asleep, and the rest of the people also slept, until the sun troubled them. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and performed tayammum. He said to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): "Call the adhan and call the iqamah." Sayyiduna Bilal asked: "Now?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" So they offered the prayer after the morning had advanced.
