Sayyiduna Dhu Mikhbar (may Allah be pleased with him), a man from Abyssinia who used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. On the return journey the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was travelling quickly; he used to do so because provisions would have run low. A man said to him: O Prophet of Allah, the people have fallen behind you. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped, and those with him stopped too, until the rest of the people caught up with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: Would you like us to rest for a little while, or for whoever wishes to take a nap to take a nap? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted, and the rest of the people also made camp. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Who will keep watch over us tonight? I said: I will, may Allah make me your ransom. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) handed me the rein of his she-camel and said: Take this, and do not become a child (that is, do not fall asleep). The narrator says: I took the rein of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) she-camel and the rein of my own she-camel, moved a short distance away and sat down. I let the two of them go to graze and was watching them, when meanwhile sleep overcame me too, and I was aware of nothing until I felt the heat of the sun on my face. I woke up and looked right and left, and I saw both she-camels not far away. I took hold of the rein of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) she-camel and the rein of my own she-camel and came to the person closest to me, and woke him. I asked: Have you people prayed? He replied: No. Then people began waking one another, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also woke. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O Bilal, is there water in the water-skin? Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, may Allah make me your ransom. Then he brought the water for ablution to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed an ablution by which even the dust was not fully moistened. Then he ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called the adhan. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and offered two rak'ahs before the morning prayer, and he did not offer them in haste. Then he ordered him, and he called the iqamah for the prayer, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the prayer without haste. A man said: O Prophet of Allah! Have we been negligent? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. Allah Almighty had taken our souls; when He returned those souls to us, we offered the prayer. The author says: Imam Abu Dawud recorded a part of this narration.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it, and the narrators of Imam Ahmad are "thiqat (trustworthy)".
