Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell us: is this Umrah of ours for this year only, or forever? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather it is forever; Umrah has entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection." I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our religion as though we were looking at it: has everything already been written by the pens and have the decrees been settled, or is it a new matter that we begin? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, (it is) what has been written by the pens and what the decrees have settled." I said: Then what is the point of deeds, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep doing deeds, for each person is made easy for that for which he was created."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the state of ihram, even the women and children were in ihram. When we reached Makkah, we performed tawaf of the House of Allah and sa'i of Safa and Marwah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "Whoever does not have a sacrificial animal (hady) with him, let him come out of ihram." We said: How (fully) are we to come out of ihram? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come out of ihram completely." So we went to our wives, put on (ordinary) clothes and applied perfume. Then when the Day of Tarwiyah came, we entered ihram for Hajj, and the first tawaf between Safa and Marwah (that is, the sa'i) sufficed for us. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to share in the camels and cows, every seven of us in one large animal. Then Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: O Messenger of Allah, explain our religion to us as though we had just been created: tell us, is this Umrah of ours for this year only, or forever? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, forever."

Is it in something in which the decrees have been settled and the pens have run, or in a new matter that is begun? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, in that in which the pens have been established." Sayyiduna Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then what is the point of deeds, O Messenger of Allah? So comply with what you are commanded." Upon this Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, is this Umrah of ours that you have commanded us to perform for this year only, or forever? Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intending Hajj; we had no intention other than Hajj. Then when we reached Sarif, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) began menstruating. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to her while she was weeping, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What makes you weep?" She said: This affliction has befallen me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are only one of the daughters of Adam; what befalls them befalls you too." Then we reached Makkah when four nights of Dhu al-Hijjah had passed, and we performed tawaf of the House of Allah and between Safa and Marwah as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded us. Then we discussed among ourselves and said: We set out intending Hajj, wanting nothing but Hajj and having no other intention, until when only four nights remained between us and Arafat, our private parts are dripping semen from (relations with) women! This reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "Umrah has entered into Hajj. Had I known beforehand what I came to know afterwards, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal (hady), and were it not for the sacrificial animal, I would have come out of ihram. So whoever does not have a sacrificial animal with him, let him come out of ihram." Then we went to Arafah, and when it was time to return, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah, all of you have performed tawaf of the House of Allah and between Safa and Marwah, while I have not performed tawaf? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have the same as the others have." She said: But I feel something in my heart. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped and waited for her in the upper part of the valley of Makkah, and had Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) take her on his mount, until she reached al-Tan'im.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: All of us arrived (in Makkah) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in ihram for Hajj, on the morning after four days of Dhu al-Hijjah had passed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us the order, so we performed tawaf of the House of Allah, prayed, and performed sa'i between Safa and Marwah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us, so we had our hair trimmed. Then he said: "Come out of ihram." We said: O Messenger of Allah, come out of ihram from what? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Everything that is lawful for a person not in ihram, including women and perfume." (The narrator says:) So relations with women took place, and the incense burners blazed. It reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) that some people were saying: Is one of us to go to Mina while his organ is dripping semen? So he (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed them, praised and extolled Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and then said: "Had I known beforehand what I came to know afterwards, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal (hady), and had I not brought the sacrificial animal, I would have shaved my head. Behold! Learn your rites (of Hajj)." (The narrator says:) Then all the people remained in that state until, when the Day of Tarwiyah came and they intended to set out for Mina, they entered ihram for Hajj. (The narrator says:) The sacrificial animal was due on whoever could afford it, and fasting on whoever could not, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) made them share in their sacrificial animals: one camel on behalf of seven men and one cow on behalf of seven men. And their tawaf of the House of Allah and their sa'i between Safa and Marwah were a single tawaf and a single sa'i for both their Hajj and their Umrah. (The narrator) did not mention the story of Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abu Shihab Musa bin Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I came to Makkah performing tamattu' with Umrah. We arrived three days before (the Day of) Tarwiyah, and the people of Makkah said to me: Now your Hajj will become a Makkan Hajj. So I went to Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) to ask for a fatwa. He said: Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that he performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the year when he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought the sacrificial animals (hady) with him, and the people had entered ihram for Hajj alone (ifrad). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Come out of your ihram by performing tawaf of the House of Allah and sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and remain out of ihram until, when the Day of Tarwiyah comes, enter ihram for Hajj, and make the (ihram of Hajj) with which you came a mut'ah (tamattu')." They said: How can we make it a mut'ah when we have declared the intention of Hajj? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do what I have commanded you. Had I not brought the sacrificial animal, I too would have done what I have commanded you. But nothing forbidden will become lawful for me until the sacrificial animal reaches its place." So they did so. (The narrator) did not mention the story of Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).

When we arrived, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us, so we made it an Umrah, and (he ordered) that we become lawful for our wives. Then talk arose about this. Ata says: Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Is one of us to go to Mina while his organ is dripping semen? Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "It has reached me that some people are saying such and such. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to remain in his ihram, and made him a partner in his sacrificial animals.
