Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in ihram for Hajj. When we reached Makkah, we performed tawaf of the House of Allah and between Safa and Marwah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us and said: "Whoever among you has not brought a sacrificial animal (hady), let him come out of ihram and make it an Umrah." We said: O Messenger of Allah, come out of ihram from what? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come out of ihram completely." So we went to the women, put on (ordinary) clothes and applied perfume. Then some people said: (Are we to) come out of ihram when only four days remain between us and Arafah? This reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us somewhat displeased and said: "By Allah, you know that I am the most God-fearing of you towards Allah, and had I known that you would say this, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal. So comply with what you are commanded." Upon this Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, is this Umrah of ours that you have commanded us to perform for this year only, or forever? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, forever." Sayyiduna Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our religion as though we had just been created: is it something in which the pens have dried and the decrees have been settled, or a new matter that is begun? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, it is something in which the pens have dried and the decrees have been settled." Sayyiduna Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then what is the point of deeds, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep doing deeds, for every doer is given ease." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "As for him who gives and fears (Allah), and affirms the best, We will ease him towards ease. And as for him who is miserly and considers himself free of need, and denies the best, We will ease him towards hardship" [Surah al-Layl: 6-10].
