It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) al-Mudlaji said: O Messenger of Allah, tell us about this religion of ours as though we had been created for it this very hour: on what basis do we act? Is it in something in which the decrees have been settled and the pens have run, or in a new matter that is begun? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, in that in which the pens have been established." Sayyiduna Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then what is the point of deeds, O Messenger of Allah? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep doing deeds, for every doer is made easy for that for which he was created." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "As for him who gives and fears (Allah), and affirms the best (that is, La ilaha illallah), We will ease him towards ease. And as for him who is miserly and considers himself free of need, and denies the best (that is, La ilaha illallah), We will ease him towards hardship" [Surah al-Layl: 6-10].
