Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered ihram, and we entered ihram with him for Hajj alone, until we reached Makkah on the morning of the fourth of Dhu al-Hijjah. We performed tawaf of the House of Allah and of Safa and Marwah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered those of us who had not brought a sacrificial animal (hady) to come out of ihram. (Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him)) says: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give an emphatic command regarding women. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) left us (as we were) until, when only five nights remained between us and Arafah, he ordered us to come out of ihram; are we then to go to Arafat with prostatic fluid (madhi) dripping from our private parts, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) himself has not come out of ihram? And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had brought the sacrificial animal. (Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him)) says: This statement of ours reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to address the people. He praised and extolled Allah, then mentioned what had reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "You know that I am the most God-fearing of you towards Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, the most truthful of you and the most righteous of you. Had I not brought the sacrificial animal, I would have come out of ihram, and had I known beforehand what I came to know afterwards, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal." Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So we heard and obeyed, and came out of ihram. (The narrator) al-Layth says: By this he means mut'ah (Hajj al-Tamattu'). Al-Layth did not mention the story of Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).
