Sayyiduna Aqil bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Quraysh came to Abu Talib and said: "O Abu Talib, your nephew comes to us in our courtyards and in our gathering places and makes us hear what hurts us. If you see fit, then stop him from coming to us." Abu Talib said to me: "O Aqil! Go and find your cousin for me!" So I brought him out from one of Abu Talib's small dwellings, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came walking with me. He was seeking shade to walk in, but could not find it, until he reached Abu Talib. Abu Talib said to him: "O my nephew! By Allah! As far as I know, you have always obeyed me. Your people came, claiming that you come to them at their Ka'bah and in their gathering places and make them hear what hurts them. So if you see fit, refrain from that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards the sky and said: "By Allah! I am no more able to abandon what I have been sent with than any one of you is able to light a flame of fire from this sun." Abu Talib said: "By Allah! My nephew has never lied. Go back rightly guided."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, except that he has the word jals in place of the word kibs. Abu Ya'la recorded it with a slight abridgement at its beginning. The narrators of Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih.

Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I said to him: "Of the hostility that the Quraysh showed towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), what was the most severe thing you saw?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was present with them when their nobles had gathered one day in the Hatim. They began to mention the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "We have never had to bear with anyone as we have had to bear with this young man. He has made fools of our wise men, he reviles our forefathers, he finds fault with our religion, he has scattered our unity, and he speaks ill of our gods. We have borne a grave matter from him", or words to that effect. While they were there in that state, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared before them. He came walking and touched the Corner, then passed by them while circling the House. When he passed by them, they made taunting remarks at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I sensed his displeasure from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he went on. When he passed by them a second time they did the same again, and I could tell the displeasure from his face, but he went on. When he passed in front of them the third time and they did the same again, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people of Quraysh, do you hear? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have come to you with slaughter (that is, you will be killed)." When the people heard his words, the state was such that it was as if a bird were perched on every man's head, so much so that even the one who had previously been most vehement against him spoke to him in the best manner and said: "O Abu al-Qasim, go; go in peace. By Allah! You were never one to act so harshly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left. When the next day came, they gathered in the Hatim and I was with them. One of them said to another: "Do you remember what went from you and what came to you from him? Then, when he openly confronted you with what you dislike, you left him alone." While they were sitting in that state, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared before them. They rose together and went towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), surrounded him and began saying: "Are you the one who said such and such?", mentioning the things that had reached them about his criticism of their gods and their religion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, I am the one who said that." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw one man who seized the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) cloak where it gathered, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), weeping and saying: "Would you kill a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'?" Then they left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and went away. That was the most severe thing I ever saw the Quraysh do against him. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of it is recorded in the Sahih.
Ahmad recorded it; Ibn Ishaq has explicitly stated that he heard it directly. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I never saw the Quraysh intend to kill the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except on one day, when they consulted one another about it. They were sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying near the Station of Ibrahim. Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt got up and went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), put his cloak around the neck of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then pulled it until he fell to his knees. The people began shouting, thinking that he had been killed. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came running and took hold of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by the upper arm from behind, saying: "Would you kill a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'?" Then the people drew back from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and when he had completed his prayer he passed by them while they were sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah. He said: "O people of Quraysh, by the One in whose hand is my soul, I have been sent to you only with slaughter." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this while pointing with his blessed hand towards his throat. Abu Jahl said to him: "O Muhammad! You were never one to act harshly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are one of them (who will be slaughtered)."
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqamah, and his hadith is hasan (good). The remaining narrators of al-Tabarani are the narrators of the Sahih.

It is reported about Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) that people said to her: "What was the most severe thing you saw the polytheists inflict on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The polytheists were sitting in the Mosque (that is, near the Ka'bah), talking about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and about what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says about their gods. While they were in that state, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and they all rose and went towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Someone came and called out loudly to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Reach your master!" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went out from us; he had four plaits of hair, and he was saying: "Woe to you! Would you kill a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah', when he has brought you clear signs from your Lord?" So they left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and turned upon Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came back to us, and his state was such that whichever of his locks of hair he touched came away with his hand, and he was saying: "Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour!"
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains Tadrus, the grandfather of Abu al-Zubayr, and I do not know him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was a boy approaching puberty, and I used to graze the goats of Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came; both of them were escaping from the polytheists. They both said: "O boy! Do you have any milk that you can give us to drink?" I said: "I am entrusted (with them); I will not give you both to drink."
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and the narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih.

Jubayr bin Nufayr narrates: One day we were sitting with Sayyiduna Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him). A man passed by us while we were attentive to him (al-Miqdad). He said: "Glad tidings for these two eyes that saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah! We wish that we had seen what you saw and been present where you were present." Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) turned towards him and said: "What makes a man wish to be present where Allah Almighty kept him absent, when he does not know what he would have done in that situation? By Allah! In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there were many people whom Allah Almighty will throw face down on their noses into Hell. Those people did not accept the word of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not affirm him. Does not each one of you praise Allah Almighty that you know none but your Lord, and that you affirm what your Prophet brought, and that others were put to the trial instead of you? By Allah! When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, no other prophet had ever been sent in a situation as severe, neither in a period of fitrah nor in a time of ignorance. People thought that there could be no religion more excellent than the worship of idols. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought the Criterion (Furqan), which distinguished between truth and falsehood and separated the father from the son, to the extent that a man would see his father, or his son, or his brother as a disbeliever, while Allah Almighty had opened the lock of his heart for faith, so that he would know that the Lord has said (or the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has said) that whoever enters Hell is ruined. So his eye finds no comfort, knowing that his close one is in Hell. It is about this that Allah Almighty has said: (they say:) "Our Lord! Grant us from our wives and our offspring the coolness of our eyes.""
Al-Tabarani recorded it with several chains. One of its chains contains Yahya bin Salih, whom al-Dhahabi declared thiqah (trustworthy), but the hadith scholars have criticised him. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the Mosque (that is, near the Ka'bah). Abu Jahl bin Hisham, Shaybah and Utbah, the two sons of Rabi'ah, Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt, Umayyah bin Khalaf and two other men were also present there; they were seven men, and they were sitting in the Hatim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying. When he went into prostration, he prolonged the prostration. Abu Jahl said: "Which of you will go to the slaughtered camel of Banu so-and-so, bring us its dung-filled entrails and throw them on Muhammad?" So the most wretched of them, Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt, went, brought it and threw it on the shoulders of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prostration at that time and could not stop it. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was standing there at that time and could not say anything, because I did not have the standing to be able to do anything. When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), heard about this situation, she came and removed it from the shoulder of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then she turned towards the Quraysh and began to rebuke them, and they gave Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) no reply. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head as he used to raise it on completing the prostration. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer, he said three times: "O Allah! Seize the Quraysh! Seize Utbah, Uqbah, Abu Jahl and Shaybah!" Then he left the Mosque. Abu al-Bakhtari met him; Abu al-Bakhtari had a whip which he used to hold against his side. When he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and that the state of his face had changed, he asked: "What has happened to you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let me go my way." He said: "Allah knows that I will not leave you until you tell me; it seems some trouble has befallen you." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) realised that he would not leave him alone, he told him about the situation. He said: "Abu Jahl gave the order, and filth was brought and thrown upon me." Abu al-Bakhtari said: "Come to the Mosque." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu al-Bakhtari came, and both of them entered the Mosque. Abu al-Bakhtari went to Abu Jahl and said: "O Abu al-Hakam, are you the one who gave the order regarding Muhammad that filth be thrown on him?" He replied: "Yes." Abu al-Bakhtari raised the whip and struck Abu Jahl on the head with it. The men began to clash with one another. Then Abu Jahl shouted loudly: "Woe to you! Let this blow go. Muhammad wants to cast enmity among us so that he and his companions may be saved."

Qatadah bin Di'amah narrates: Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was married to Utaybah bin Abi Lahab, and Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Utbah bin Abi Lahab, but these women had not yet been sent to their husbands' homes when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent (with prophethood). When Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab", Abu Lahab said to his two sons, Utbah and Utaybah: "Any tie between me and you is forbidden until you divorce the two daughters of Muhammad." Their mother, who was the daughter of Harb bin Umayyah and who was the carrier of firewood, also said: "My sons, divorce them, for they have both changed their religion." So the two of them divorced the two daughters. When Utaybah divorced Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), having already separated from his wife, and said: "I reject your religion and I separate from your daughter. You do not love me and I do not love you." Then he lunged at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and tore the shirt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he set out for Syria for trade. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I ask Allah Almighty to set one of His dogs upon you." He set out with the merchants of Quraysh until they camped at a place in Syria called al-Zarqa'. That night a lion came around them. Utaybah began saying: "Woe to my mother! By Allah! It will devour me just as Muhammad said. Ibn Abi Kabshah, who is in Makkah while I am in Syria, will have me killed." Then from among all the people the lion attacked him, seized his head, bit into it and killed him. Zuhayr bin al-Ala' narrates: Hisham bin Urwah reported from his father that when the lion first circled them that night, it went away. The people slept, and Utaybah was sleeping in their midst. Then the beast came, stepped over the people, seized Utaybah's head and crushed it. After that, Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) married Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), and after her death he married Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in this way as a mursal report. Its chain contains Zuhayr bin al-Ala', who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day the Quraysh gathered regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Look for the one among you who knows the most about magic, soothsaying and poetry, and let him go to this man who has scattered our community, dispersed our affairs and found fault with our religion. Let him talk to him and then see what reply he gives him." They said: "As far as we know, this quality is found in Utbah bin Rabi'ah." They said: "O Abu al-Walid, you do this." Utbah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Muhammad! Are you better, or (your father) Abdullah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. He asked: "Are you better, or Abd al-Muttalib?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. He said: "If you think that these people are better than you, then they used to worship the very gods you find fault with; and if you think that you are better than them, then speak so that we may hear what you say. By Allah! We have never seen any displeasure more ill-omened for a people than yours has been for your people. You have scattered our unity, dispersed our affairs, found fault with our religion and disgraced us among the Arabs, until it has spread among them that there is a magician in the Quraysh and that there is a soothsayer in the Quraysh. By Allah! We are only waiting for something like the scream of a woman in labour, and then we will come at one another with swords and annihilate one another. O man, if you have some need, we will gather our wealth for you until you become the richest man of the Quraysh. If you wish to marry, choose whichever women of the Quraysh you like, and we will marry you to ten women." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Have you finished?" He replied: "Yes." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited these verses: "Ha Mim. A revelation from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful", up to this verse: "But if they turn away, then say: I warn you of a thunderbolt (of punishment) like the thunderbolt (of punishment) of Ad and Thamud." Utbah said: "Enough, enough! Do you have nothing other than this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "No." Utbah went back to the Quraysh. They asked: "What happened?" He said: "I said to him everything that you used to mention about him." They asked: "Then what reply did he give you?" Utbah replied: "By the One who set up the building (that is, built the Ka'bah), I did not understand anything of what he said, except that he said: 'I warn you of a thunderbolt (of punishment) like the thunderbolt (of punishment) of Ad and Thamud.'" They said: "Woe to you! A man speaks with you in Arabic and you do not understand what he is saying?" He said: "By Allah! I did not understand anything of what he said, except the mention of the thunderbolt."
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains al-Ajlah al-Kindi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and others called him da'if (weak). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Humayd bin Munhib narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was informed that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) speaks ill of Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! What he says about his uncle is a bad thing, but I will say only good about Abdullah. May Allah's mercy be upon him; he is a righteous man. Once Abu Sufyan seated his wife Hind behind him on his mount and set out towards the open country outside the town. I went out walking ahead of them; I was a young boy riding a she-donkey. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met us. Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'O Mu'awiyah, get down so that Muhammad may ride.' I got down from the she-donkey and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rode it. He went ahead of the two of them for a while, then turned towards them and said: 'O Abu Sufyan bin Harb, O Hind bint Utbah! By Allah! You will die, then you will be raised again, and then the doer of good will enter Paradise and the doer of evil will enter Hell. What I am telling you is the truth, and you are the first people to have been warned.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited these verses: 'Ha Mim. A revelation from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful', and he recited the verses up to: 'They both said: We come willingly.' Abu Sufyan said to him: 'O Muhammad! Have you finished?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: 'Yes.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got down from the donkey and I rode it. Hind turned to Abu Sufyan and said: 'Was it for this lying magician that you made my son get down from the mount?' Abu Sufyan said: 'By Allah! He is neither a magician nor a liar.'"

Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Abbad al-Du'ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I have heard what you people say, that the Quraysh used to harm the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The most I saw was that the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was between the house of Abu Lahab and the house of Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned home, he would find the wombs of animals, blood and filth placed by his door. He would push them aside with the tip of his bow and say: "O people of Quraysh! This is a bad neighbourliness."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Ibrahim bin Ali bin al-Husayn al-Rafiqi, who is da'if (weak). Some reports in support of this, regarding the enmity of the Quraysh, will come in the chapter on the signs of prophethood, if Allah wills.

Meanwhile a woman came whose throat was exposed; she was carrying a cup and a kerchief. She offered the water to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank it and performed ablution. Then he raised his head and said: "O my daughter! Keep your throat covered, and do not be anxious about your father." We asked: "Who is she?" Hadith Takhrij «اخرجه الطبراني فى المعجم الكبير (342/20)»
Sayyiduna Mudrik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I performed Hajj with my father. When we had camped at Mina, there were some people gathered there. I asked my father: "Why have these people gathered?" He told me: "This is a man who has turned away from his religion." And there was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "O people! Say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) and you will be successful."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

A man from Banu Malik bin Kinanah narrates: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the market of Dhu al-Majaz, passing through the midst of the people and saying: "O people! Say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) and you will be successful." The narrator says: Abu Jahl was throwing dust on him and saying: "O people, let this man not lead you astray from your religion. He only wants you to abandon your gods and abandon al-Lat and al-Uzza." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) paid no attention to him. The narrator says: I asked: "Describe the appearance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to us." He said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing two red cloaks. He was of medium height, full-bodied and handsome of face. His hair was intensely black and his complexion intensely white, and his hair was long."
Ahmad recorded it. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Abbad (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Banu al-Dil and had lived in the Days of Ignorance, narrates: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the market of Dhu al-Majaz, saying: "O people! Say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) and you will be successful." People would gather around him. Behind him was a man with a bright face; he was squint-eyed and wore long hair in two plaits. He would say: "This man has abandoned his religion and is a liar." Wherever he went, that man would follow behind him. I asked about him, and the people described to me the lineage of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told me that this was his uncle, Abu Lahab.

Sayyiduna Tariq bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was in the market of Dhu al-Majaz when a young man passed by wearing a red suit of clothes. He was saying: "O people! Say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) and you will be successful." Behind him was a man who had made his (that is, the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him)) shins and heels bleed, and that man was saying: "O people! This man is a liar; do not obey him." I asked: "Who is this?" Someone told me: "This is the young man from Banu Hashim who claims that he is the Messenger of Allah, and behind him is his uncle Abd al-Uzza." The narrator says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated to Madinah and people accepted Islam, on that occasion we set out from al-Rabadhah, and an elderly woman was with us. When we came to Madinah and reached near its settlement, we changed our clothes. Meanwhile we saw a man on the road. He asked: "Where have you come from?" We said: "We have come, leaving our families behind." We had a red camel standing there with a halter on it. That man asked: "Will you sell your camel?" We replied: "Yes." He asked: "For how much?" We said: "For such and such sa' of dates." He did not ask for any reduction in the price we had stated. Then he stretched out his hand, took the camel's halter and went off with it. When he disappeared from our sight among the dwellings, we said: "By Allah! What have we done? We have made a deal with a man whom we do not even know." The woman who was sitting there said: "I saw a man whose face was like a piece of the full moon on the fourteenth night. By Allah! He will not wrong you or cheat you; I guarantee your camel." Then another man came and said: "I am the messenger of the Messenger of Allah to you. These are your dates; measure them, eat your fill, and measure them." The narrator says: We ate of them and were filled, and we measured them and they were complete. Then we entered Madinah and came to the Mosque, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the pulpit delivering a sermon. We heard him say: "Give charity, for charity is better for you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Abu Janab al-Kalbi, who is a mudallis; Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy). The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
