Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I said to him: "Of the hostility that the Quraysh showed towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), what was the most severe thing you saw?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was present with them when their nobles had gathered one day in the Hatim. They began to mention the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "We have never had to bear with anyone as we have had to bear with this young man. He has made fools of our wise men, he reviles our forefathers, he finds fault with our religion, he has scattered our unity, and he speaks ill of our gods. We have borne a grave matter from him", or words to that effect. While they were there in that state, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared before them. He came walking and touched the Corner, then passed by them while circling the House. When he passed by them, they made taunting remarks at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I sensed his displeasure from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he went on. When he passed by them a second time they did the same again, and I could tell the displeasure from his face, but he went on. When he passed in front of them the third time and they did the same again, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people of Quraysh, do you hear? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have come to you with slaughter (that is, you will be killed)." When the people heard his words, the state was such that it was as if a bird were perched on every man's head, so much so that even the one who had previously been most vehement against him spoke to him in the best manner and said: "O Abu al-Qasim, go; go in peace. By Allah! You were never one to act so harshly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left. When the next day came, they gathered in the Hatim and I was with them. One of them said to another: "Do you remember what went from you and what came to you from him? Then, when he openly confronted you with what you dislike, you left him alone." While they were sitting in that state, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared before them. They rose together and went towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), surrounded him and began saying: "Are you the one who said such and such?", mentioning the things that had reached them about his criticism of their gods and their religion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, I am the one who said that." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw one man who seized the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) cloak where it gathered, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), weeping and saying: "Would you kill a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'?" Then they left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and went away. That was the most severe thing I ever saw the Quraysh do against him. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of it is recorded in the Sahih.
Ahmad recorded it; Ibn Ishaq has explicitly stated that he heard it directly. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
