Qatadah bin Di'amah narrates: Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was married to Utaybah bin Abi Lahab, and Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Utbah bin Abi Lahab, but these women had not yet been sent to their husbands' homes when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent (with prophethood). When Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab", Abu Lahab said to his two sons, Utbah and Utaybah: "Any tie between me and you is forbidden until you divorce the two daughters of Muhammad." Their mother, who was the daughter of Harb bin Umayyah and who was the carrier of firewood, also said: "My sons, divorce them, for they have both changed their religion." So the two of them divorced the two daughters. When Utaybah divorced Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), having already separated from his wife, and said: "I reject your religion and I separate from your daughter. You do not love me and I do not love you." Then he lunged at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and tore the shirt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he set out for Syria for trade. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I ask Allah Almighty to set one of His dogs upon you." He set out with the merchants of Quraysh until they camped at a place in Syria called al-Zarqa'. That night a lion came around them. Utaybah began saying: "Woe to my mother! By Allah! It will devour me just as Muhammad said. Ibn Abi Kabshah, who is in Makkah while I am in Syria, will have me killed." Then from among all the people the lion attacked him, seized his head, bit into it and killed him. Zuhayr bin al-Ala' narrates: Hisham bin Urwah reported from his father that when the lion first circled them that night, it went away. The people slept, and Utaybah was sleeping in their midst. Then the beast came, stepped over the people, seized Utaybah's head and crushed it. After that, Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) married Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), and after her death he married Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in this way as a mursal report. Its chain contains Zuhayr bin al-Ala', who is da'if (weak).
