The lower garment and its proper length

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The waist-wrapper (izar) is to the middle of the shin or to the ankles; there is no good in what is lower than that."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The muscle of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) shin could be seen below his waist-wrapper when he had wrapped it on.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains Salih bin Nabhan, the freed slave of al-Taw'amah, who suffered from confusion in his memory (ikhtilat). The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to tie his waist-wrapper to the middle of the shin, and he would say: "The waist-wrapper of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was also like this."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Musa bin Ubaydah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Samurah bin Fatik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What a fine young man Samurah is, if only he would shorten his hair and raise his waist-wrapper."
(The narrator says:) So Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) did just that: he had his hair cut, and he used to keep his waist-wrapper raised.
Ahmad recorded it from his teacher Ya'mur bin Bishr. It has been said that all of Ahmad's teachers are thiqat (trustworthy); the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Khuraym bin Fatik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What a fine young man Khuraym is, if only he would cut his hair and raise his waist-wrapper." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him) then said: "From now on my hair will not go beyond my ear, nor my waist-wrapper below my heel."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in all three books. It revolves around a narrator named al-Mas'udi, who suffered from confusion in his memory (ikhtilat), and I do not know the narrator who narrated it from him either.

It is reported about Sayyiduna Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khuraym bin Fatik! Were it not for two traits in you, you would be an excellent man." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! What are those two things? Even one is enough for me (to be at fault)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your letting your hair grow long, and your letting your waist-wrapper hang down." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him) went and had his hair shortened and raised his waist-wrapper.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it. The wording of al-Tabarani is narrated with several chains. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tie your waist-wrappers the way I have seen the angels tie theirs." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! How did you see (them)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To the middle of their shins (their waist-wrappers reach)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains al-Muthanna bin al-Sabbah, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy); Imam Ahmad and the majority of the Imams declared him da'if (weak), so much so that it has been said he is matruk (abandoned). And the narrator named Yahya bin al-Sakan is extremely da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wearing a waist-wrapper that was making a rustling sound as it dragged on the ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who is this?" I said: "Abdullah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you are Abdullah (a servant of Allah), then raise your waist-wrapper!" So I raised my waist-wrapper to the middle of the shins. The narrator says: his waist-wrapper remained like that until he died.

In one narration the wording is: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: My lower garment sometimes slips down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are not one of them. Ahmad recorded all of these narrations with two chains, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; the narrators of one of Ahmad's two chains are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a "siyara'" suit (hullah) to wear, which Fayruz had given him as a gift. I put on the lower garment, and it was far too big for me in length and width. I took the upper wrap and wrapped myself in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my shoulder and said: O Abdullah! Keep your lower garment raised, for whatever part of the lower garment touches the ground below the ankles will be in the Fire. Abdullah bin Muhammad says: I have never seen anyone who kept his lower garment raised with more care than Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: a hadith from this Companion is mentioned in the "Sahih", in a wording other than this one.
Ahmad recorded it. Abu Ya'la recorded part of it, except that his wording is: "I put on a new garment and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at that time by the chamber of Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her); this was on a dark night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the rustling of a garment." Ahmad's chain contains Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil; his hadith is hasan (good), though there is weakness in him, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever part of the lower garment is below the ankles will be in the Fire."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy); in it Ibn Ishaq has explicitly stated that he heard it directly.

Sayyiduna Amr bin Fulan al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once he was walking along with his lower garment hanging down, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came up to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding his own forelock and saying: O Allah! Your servant, the son of Your servant and of Your maidservant. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! I am a man with thin shins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Amr! Allah Almighty has made beautiful everything He created. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck with four fingers of his right palm below the knee of Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Amr! This is the place of the lower garment. Then he raised it and struck with four fingers a little below the first spot, and said: O Amr! This is the place of the lower garment. Then he lifted his hand and placed it lower still, and said: O Amr! This is the place of the lower garment.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna al-Sharid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man walking with his lower garment trailing, and said: Raise your lower garment and fear Allah Almighty! He submitted: I am a man whose legs are bowed and whose knees knock together. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Raise your lower garment! Everything Allah Almighty has created is beautiful. The narrator says: After that, whenever that man was seen, his lower garment reached the middle of his shins.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it. He states: Whenever that man was seen, his lower garment was at the middle of his shins. Ahmad's narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were going along with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna Amr bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with us. He was wearing a suit (hullah), that is, a lower garment and an upper wrap, and the lower garment was hanging down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the edge of his garment, humbling himself before Allah Almighty, and said: O Allah! This is Your servant, the son of Your servant and the son of Your maidservant. Sayyiduna Amr bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him) heard this, turned towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and submitted: O Messenger of Allah! I am a man with thin shins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Amr bin Zurarah! Indeed, Allah Almighty has made beautiful everything He created. O Amr bin Zurarah! Indeed, Allah Almighty does not love the one who lets his lower garment hang down. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his palm below his own knee and said: O Amr bin Zurarah! This is the place of the lower garment. Then he raised his hand, placed it below the first spot and said: O Amr! This is the place of the lower garment.
Al-Tabarani recorded it with several chains, and the narrators of one of them are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever of the lower garment is below the ankles will be in the Fire."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Ubaydullah bin Tammam, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Everything of the lower garment that goes below the ankles will be in the Fire."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains al-Yaman bin al-Mughirah, who is da'if (weak) according to the majority; Ibn Adi said: There is no harm in him.

It is reported from a tailor who cut a shirt for Imam Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both); he narrates: I said: Shall I make it reach the top of the foot? Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No! I said: Shall I make it go below the ankles? Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whatever is below the ankles will be in the Fire.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. The tailor is not named, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw a Bedouin praying with his lower garment hanging down, and he said: The one who lets his lower garment hang down during prayer is not in anything lawful or unlawful from Allah Almighty.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

It is reported about Sayyiduna Hubayb bin Mughfil (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw Muhammad al-Qurashi stand up with his lower garment dragging, and Sayyiduna Hubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever treads on it out of arrogance will tread on it in the Fire."
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it. Ahmad's narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Aslam Abu Imran, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Ata' bin Yasar reports the following statement of a Companion: Once a man was praying with his lower garment hanging down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Go and perform ablution! The narrator says: The man went, and when he came back, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go and perform ablution! Then the man came back, and he (that is, the narrating Companion) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Why is it that you ordered this man to perform ablution and then remained silent about him? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This man was praying with his lower garment hanging down, and Allah Almighty does not accept the prayer of a servant who lets his lower garment hang down."
The author of "al-Atraf" attributed this narration to Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him); I did not find this narration in the copy I have; perhaps it is in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" of al-Nasa'i.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from Quraysh came, strutting in his suit (hullah). When he came and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Buraydah! This is one of those for whom Allah Almighty will not set up any weight on the Day of Resurrection.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain contains Awn bin Umarah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while we were gathered together, and said: O assembly of Muslims! Fear Allah Almighty and maintain the ties of kinship, for there is no reward that comes more quickly than that of maintaining the ties of kinship. Beware of transgression, for there is no punishment that comes more quickly than the punishment of transgression. Beware of disobedience to parents, for the fragrance of Paradise can be perceived from a distance of a thousand years' journey, and by Allah! the one disobedient to his parents, the one who severs the ties of kinship, the old man who commits adultery, and the one who lets his lower garment hang down out of arrogance will not find it. For grandeur belongs to Allah Almighty alone, the Lord of all the worlds. And lying, all of it, is sin, except that by which you benefit a believer, or by which you defend the religion. In Paradise there are markets in which there will be no buying and selling; there will be nothing in them but forms. Whoever likes any form of a man or a woman will take on that form.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Kathir al-Kufi, who is extremely da'if (weak).

Kurayb narrates: I was leading Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) through the alley of Abu Lahab. He said: O Kurayb! Have we reached such-and-such a place? I replied: You are there right now. He said: Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) told me: Once I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at this place, when a man came strutting along between two cloaks; he was showing pride in his cloaks and was full of self-admiration. Then Allah Almighty caused the earth to swallow him at this place, and he will keep sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection.
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it. Al-Bazzar recorded something similar in abridged form. Its chain contains Rishdin bin Kurayb, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the times before you, a man went out wearing two green cloaks, behaving arrogantly. Allah Almighty commanded the earth, and the earth seized him, and he will keep sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded it with several chains. The narrators of one of al-Bazzar's chains are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the times before you, a man went out wearing two cloaks and was arrogant in them. Allah Almighty commanded the earth, the earth seized him, and he will keep sinking into the earth until the Day of Resurrection."
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains Ziyad bin Abdullah al-Numayri, who is da'if (weak); Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy) and said: He makes mistakes.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) (the narrator says: I think) reports this as a marfu' hadith (from the Prophet): "A man was wearing a red suit (hullah) and was strutting in it arrogantly, so Allah Almighty caused the earth to swallow him, and he will keep sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Once a man, looking at his garments, was full of self-admiration, and he will keep sinking into the earth until the Day of Resurrection." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) have recorded from this Companion: "A man was walking with his lower garment trailing." Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) added the words: "He was doing so out of arrogance, and the earth was made to swallow him."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The believer's lower garment is to the middle of the shin; there is no blame on him for what is between there and the ankles, but whatever is below that will be in the Fire."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains al-Hakam bin Abd al-Malik al-Qurashi, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever lets his garment trail out of arrogance, Allah Almighty will not look at him with mercy on the Day of Resurrection, even if he is honoured in the sight of Allah Almighty."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani, who is da'if (weak).

Abu Ishaq narrates: I saw some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) whose lower garments reached the middle of their shins. Then the narrator mentioned Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) (as being among those who did so).
