Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Mention was made of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and how much of their garments they may let hang down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A hand-span. Those wives submitted: A hand-span is little; the parts that must be covered will be exposed by it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A forearm's length (dhira'). They submitted: In that case the feet will show. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A forearm's length; no more than that.
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Zayd bin al-Hawari al-Ammi, who has been declared trustworthy, but most of the imams declared him da'if (weak).
