Abu Hurrah al-Raqashi narrates from his paternal uncle: On the middle day of the days of Tashriq, I was holding the reins of the she-camel of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and keeping the people away from him. He said (while delivering a sermon): "O people! Do you know in which month you are, on which day you are, and in which city you are?" The people said: "On a sacred day, in a sacred city and in a sacred month." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Your lives, your wealth and your honour are inviolable to one another, just as this day of yours is inviolable in this month of yours, in this city of yours; and so it will remain until you appear (before Allah Almighty)." Then he said: "Listen to me and you will live (in peace). Beware, do not commit injustice! Beware, do not commit injustice! Beware, do not commit injustice! It is not lawful to take the wealth of a Muslim man without his consent. Beware, every claim of blood, every claim to privilege and every claim to wealth from the dealings of the Age of Ignorance is beneath these feet of mine until the Day of Resurrection. The first blood to be remitted is the blood of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib, who was a nursing child among Banu Layth and was killed by the tribe of Hudhayl. Beware, every usury (riba) of the Age of Ignorance is abolished, and Allah has decreed that the first usury to be abolished is the usury of Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (that is, what he was due to collect from people). You shall have your capital; you shall neither wrong nor be wronged. Beware, time has come round to the same state it was in on the day Allah Almighty created the heavens and the earth." Then he recited this verse:
"Indeed, the number of months with Allah Almighty is twelve months, as it was ordained in the Book of Allah Almighty on the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the upright religion, so do not wrong yourselves in these months."
(Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "And beware, do not become disbelievers after me, striking one another's necks. Beware, Satan has despaired of being worshipped by those who pray, but he will sow discord among you. And fear Allah Almighty concerning women, for they are with you as ones bound to you; they possess nothing for themselves. These women have a right over you, and you have a right over them: that they do not let anyone other than you onto your bedding, and that they do not permit anyone whom you dislike to enter your homes. If you fear disobedience from them, admonish them, leave them alone in their beds, and strike them in a way that leaves no mark."
The narrator Humayd says: I asked the narrator al-Hasan: "What is meant by the word 'mubarrih'?" He said: "That which leaves a mark."
(Allah Almighty says:) "Their provision and their clothing are to be given to them in a fitting manner."
(The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "You have taken these women as a trust from Allah Almighty, and you have made their private parts lawful for yourselves by the command of Allah Almighty. Beware, whoever has been entrusted with a trust, let him return it to the one who entrusted him with it." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spread out both his hands and said: "Have I conveyed the message? Have I conveyed the message?" Then he said: "Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent, for sometimes the one to whom it is conveyed may be more fortunate than the one who heard it directly."
The narrator Humayd says: When the narrator al-Hasan reached this statement he would say: "By Allah! They conveyed it to peoples who were more fortunate in it."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded from this narration only the part about striking women.
Imam Ahmad recorded it. Imam Abu Dawud declared the narrator Abu Hurrah al-Raqashi thiqah (trustworthy), while Yahya bin Ma'in declared him da'if (weak). Its chain contains Ali bin Zayd, and there has been criticism of him.

Abu Nadrah narrates: Someone who heard the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the middle day of the days of Tashriq narrated to me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Your Lord is one and your forefather (that is, Sayyiduna Adam, peace be upon him) is one. Beware, no Arab has any superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, nor a black person over a white person, nor a white person over a black person, except through taqwa (God-consciousness). Have I conveyed the message?" The people said: "The Messenger of Allah has conveyed the message." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which day is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred day." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which month is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred month." He asked: "Which city is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred city." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has made your lives and your wealth inviolable among you." The narrator says: I do not know whether he used the words "and your honour" or not. (Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "Just as this day of yours is inviolable in this month of yours, in this city of yours. Have I conveyed the message?" The people said: "The Messenger of Allah has conveyed the message." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: This surah was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was at Mina on the middle day of the days of Tashriq. He realised that it carried the message of his death. He gave orders concerning his she-camel al-Qaswa', and it was saddled. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted it and stopped before the people at al-Aqabah, and as many of the Muslims as Allah willed gathered around him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah Almighty and extolled Him as befits Him, then he said: "Now then, O people! Every claim of blood (that is, every case of killing) from the Age of Ignorance is void, and the first of your cases to be declared void is the killing of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith, who was a nursing child among Banu Layth and was killed by the tribe of Hudhayl. Every usury (riba) from the Age of Ignorance is remitted, and the first of your usury that I remit is the usury of Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) (the usury he was due to take from people). O people! Time is running in the same way as it was on the day Allah Almighty created the heavens and the earth. Indeed, the number of months is twelve, of which four are sacred: Rajab of Mudar, which comes between Jumada al-Thani and Sha'ban, Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram. That is the upright religion, so do not wrong yourselves in these months. 'Indeed, the postponement (of the sacred months) is only an increase in disbelief, by which those who disbelieve are led astray; they make it lawful one year and forbidden another year, so as to match the number of what Allah Almighty has made sacred.'" The narrator says: They would declare the month of Safar lawful one year and declare Muharram sacred another year; that is the postponement (al-nasi'). "O people! Whoever has a deposit with him, let him return it to the one who entrusted him with it. O people! Satan has despaired of being worshipped in your land until the end of time, but he will be content with petty deeds from you, so be on guard, for the sake of your religion, against petty deeds. O people! Women are bound to you; you have taken them as a trust from Allah Almighty and made their private parts lawful for yourselves by the command of Allah Almighty. You have a right over them and they have a right over you. Among your rights over them is that they do not let anyone other than you onto your bedding and that they do not disobey you in what is good. If they do that, then you have no case against them, and their provision and clothing are to be given to them in a fitting manner. If you strike them, then strike in a way that leaves no mark. It is not lawful for any person to take anything from his brother's wealth, except what that brother gives willingly. O people! I am leaving among you something which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: it is the Book of Allah, so act upon it. O people! Which day is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred day." He asked: "Which city is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred city." He asked: "Which month is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred month." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then Allah Almighty has made your lives, your wealth and your honour inviolable, just as this day is inviolable in this month and in this city. Beware, let those of you who are present convey it to those who are absent. There will be no prophet after me and no nation after you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands and said: "O Allah! Bear witness." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A part of this narration is reported in the Sahih and other books.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain contains Musa bin Ubaydah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said during the Farewell Pilgrimage: "This is a sacred day and a sacred city. Your lives, your wealth and your honour are inviolable to you, just as this day (is inviolable), and so they will remain from this day until the day you appear before Him; even this is forbidden: that a Muslim should push another Muslim aside intending to harm him. I will tell you who a Muslim is: a Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand people are safe. A believer is the one from whom people feel secure concerning their lives and their wealth. An emigrant (muhajir) is the one who abandons errors and sins. And a striver (mujahid) is the one who strives against himself to keep to the obedience of Allah Almighty." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Ibn Majah recorded only this part of the narration: "A believer is the one from whom people are safe, and an emigrant is the one who abandons errors and sins."
Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, the latter in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in abridged form; the narrators of Imam al-Bazzar are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the Farewell Pilgrimage, in the days of al-Adha, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: "Is this not the sacred day?" The people said: "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the sanctity between you will remain until the Day of Resurrection just as this day is sacred. I will tell you who a Muslim is: the one from whose tongue and hand (other) Muslims are safe. I will tell you who a believer is: the one from whom people are safe concerning their wealth and their lives. And I will tell you who an emigrant (muhajir) is: the one who abandons evil deeds. A believer is inviolable to another believer just as this day is sacred: his flesh (that is, his honour) is inviolable to him, that he should eat it by backbiting him in his absence; his honour is inviolable to him, that he should tear it apart; his face is inviolable to him, that he should slap it; his blood is inviolable, that he should shed it; his wealth is inviolable to him, that he should wrong him in it; and harming him is forbidden to him, that he should push him aside."

Ubadah bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr narrates: Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Umayyah bin Khalaf al-Jumahi (may Allah be pleased with him) is the one who, on the Day of Arafah, stood beneath the neck of the she-camel of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and loudly (repeated the words of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Call out loudly," and he had a loud voice. (He called out:) "O people! Do you know which month this is?" He called it out loudly, and the people said: "Yes! It is the sacred month." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has made your lives and your wealth inviolable to one another until you appear before your Lord, just like the sanctity of this month of yours." Then he said: "Call out loudly: Do you know which city this is?" He repeated it loudly, and the people said: "Yes! It is the sacred city." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your lives and your wealth are inviolable to one another until the day you appear before Allah Almighty, just like the sanctity of this city of yours." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call out and ask: Which day is this?" He called it out loudly, and the people said: "This is a sacred day, and this is the day of the Greater Hajj." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has made your lives and your wealth inviolable to one another until the day you appear before Him, just like the sanctity of this day of yours."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir as a mursal narration, as you can see, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Hujayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon and said: "O people! Which city is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred city." He asked: "Which month is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred month." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware, your lives, your wealth and your honour are inviolable to one another, just as this day of yours is sacred in this month of yours, and just as this city of yours is sacred. Let those of you who are present convey it to those who are absent. Do not become disbelievers after me, striking one another's necks."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir as a narration of Makhshi bin Hujayr, and I have not found anyone who has written his biography.

In one narration the wording is: Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Farewell Hajj he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this: He was on his she-camel al-Jad'a'; he had placed his feet in the stirrups and had placed one of his two hands on the front leg and the other on the rear leg, so that he would be clearly visible. He said: "O people, be silent! Perhaps you will not see me after this year of yours." After this the narrator mentioned the narration as before. All of these narrations were recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), and the rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Fahd bin al-Bakhtari bin Shu'ayb bin Amr bin al-Azraq narrates: Shu'ayb bin Umar told me: I went to Makkah. When I was at al-Dariyyah, some of my companions said to me: "Would you like to meet a man who has the honour of being a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I replied: "Yes!" That person said: "The one in the tent pitched at such-and-such a place (is a Companion)." I said to my companions: "Get up and come with us to him." When we reached that tent, we gave the greeting of peace. That man returned our greeting and asked: "Who are you people?" We said: "We are from the people of Basrah. We have been informed that you have the honour of being a Companion." He replied: "Yes! I kept the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and on the day of the Farewell Hajj I was sitting beneath his pulpit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah Almighty, and then said: 'Allah Almighty says: O people, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you into various peoples and tribes so that you may know one another. The most honoured of you in the sight of Allah Almighty is the one who is most God-fearing among you. No Arab has any superiority over a non-Arab, no non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab, no black person has any superiority over a white person, and no white person has any superiority over a black person, except in the matter of taqwa (God-consciousness). O people of Quraysh, let it not be that you come carrying the world on your necks while the people come bringing the Hereafter. I cannot avail you anything against Allah Almighty.'" The narrator says: We asked (that man): "What is your name?" He told us: "I am al-Adda' bin Khalid bin Amr bin Amir, who was the horseman of al-Dahya' in the time of Ignorance."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir with various chains.
This narration is da'if (weak). Before this, in the chapter concerning the sermon on the Day of Arafah,
this narration has already passed with a sahih (authentic) chain. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Other hadiths of this kind will come in the chapters on blood-money and on trials (fitan).

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Asim al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), during the Farewell Hajj, on the middle day of the Days of Tashriq, saying in the course of his sermon: "Is this a sacred day?" The people replied: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sanctity among you is like the sanctity of this day of yours. Shall I tell you who a Muslim is? A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the other Muslims are safe. Shall I tell you who a believer is? A believer is the one from whom the Muslims are safe with regard to their lives and their wealth. Shall I tell you who an emigrant (muhajir) is? An emigrant is the one who keeps away from evil deeds, those evil deeds which Allah Almighty has made forbidden for him. A believer is sacred to another believer just as the sanctity of this day. His flesh is sacred to the other, that he should eat it by backbiting him in his absence; his honour is sacred to the other, that he should violate it; his face is sacred to the other, that he should slap it; harming him is forbidden to the other, that he should cause him harm; and it is also forbidden to him that he should push him aside in a way that causes him distress."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a female narrator, Karamah bint al-Husayn, and I have not found anyone who mentions her.

Kulthum bin Jubayr narrates: We were with Anbasah bin Sa'id. One day I rode to al-Hajjaj. A man came to him whose name was Sayyiduna Abu Ghadiyah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him). Abd al-A'la bin Abdullah said to them: "Get up, go to him and have him dismount from his mount, and say: 'Now is the time for him to return.'" We went out to him and said to him: "Now is the time for him to return." He dismounted from his mount and came to Abd al-A'la bin Abdullah. He asked for something to drink, and water was brought in a glass cup; he refused to drink water from glass. Then water was brought in a wooden cup, and he drank it. He said: "I gave the pledge of allegiance at the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I returned the wealth to my family." A man named Rashid bin Unayf, who was present with Abd al-A'la, asked him: "Did you give the pledge with this right hand of yours?" Abd al-A'la rebuked him and said: "Was he supposed to give the pledge with his left hand?" That man (Abu Ghadiyah) related: "On the day of al-Aqabah I was present at the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: 'Indeed, your lives and your wealth are as inviolable to one another as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month, in this city of yours. Beware! Do not become disbelievers after me, striking one another's necks.'" (Sayyiduna Abu Ghadiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also related:) "When the day came on which Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged, I heard a man saying: 'Will he not be killed?' When I looked, it was Ammar. Had it not been for his companions behind him, I would have trampled on his belly. At that time I prayed: 'O Allah, if You will, let me meet him again.' Then, when the occasion of the Battle of Siffin came, I saw a man of fine (that is, distinguished) appearance who was leading a battalion on foot. I looked at his armour; when it was lifted from his knee, I struck him with a spear, and it was 'Ammar'."

In one narration it is reported from him that he said: Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) was among the best of us. After this the narrator mentioned the narration as before, and added this: A freed slave of ours said: "Which hand could suffice for him?" I have not seen anyone who, in my view, was more clearly astray than him: he had heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and yet he killed Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in the same way, as a complete narration, in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir with two chains, the narrators of one of which are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Sarra' bint Nabhan (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the mistress of a household in the time of Ignorance, narrates: On the occasion of the Farewell Hajj I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Do you know what day this is?" That lady narrates: This was the day which you call the Day of al-Ru'us. The people replied: "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the middle day of the Days of Tashriq." He asked: "Do you know what city this is?" The people replied: "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is al-Mash'ar al-Haram." Then he said: "Perhaps I will not meet you after this year. Beware! Your lives, your wealth and your honour are as inviolable to one another as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours, and this will remain until you present yourselves before your Lord and He questions you about your deeds. Beware! Let the one who is near convey it to the one who is far. Have I conveyed?" (The female narrator says:) When we came to Madinah, only a short time after that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud has recorded a portion of this narration.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
