Kulthum bin Jubayr narrates: We were with Anbasah bin Sa'id. One day I rode to al-Hajjaj. A man came to him whose name was Sayyiduna Abu Ghadiyah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him). Abd al-A'la bin Abdullah said to them: "Get up, go to him and have him dismount from his mount, and say: 'Now is the time for him to return.'" We went out to him and said to him: "Now is the time for him to return." He dismounted from his mount and came to Abd al-A'la bin Abdullah. He asked for something to drink, and water was brought in a glass cup; he refused to drink water from glass. Then water was brought in a wooden cup, and he drank it. He said: "I gave the pledge of allegiance at the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I returned the wealth to my family." A man named Rashid bin Unayf, who was present with Abd al-A'la, asked him: "Did you give the pledge with this right hand of yours?" Abd al-A'la rebuked him and said: "Was he supposed to give the pledge with his left hand?" That man (Abu Ghadiyah) related: "On the day of al-Aqabah I was present at the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: 'Indeed, your lives and your wealth are as inviolable to one another as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month, in this city of yours. Beware! Do not become disbelievers after me, striking one another's necks.'" (Sayyiduna Abu Ghadiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also related:) "When the day came on which Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged, I heard a man saying: 'Will he not be killed?' When I looked, it was Ammar. Had it not been for his companions behind him, I would have trampled on his belly. At that time I prayed: 'O Allah, if You will, let me meet him again.' Then, when the occasion of the Battle of Siffin came, I saw a man of fine (that is, distinguished) appearance who was leading a battalion on foot. I looked at his armour; when it was lifted from his knee, I struck him with a spear, and it was 'Ammar'."
