Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: This surah was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was at Mina on the middle day of the days of Tashriq. He realised that it carried the message of his death. He gave orders concerning his she-camel al-Qaswa', and it was saddled. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted it and stopped before the people at al-Aqabah, and as many of the Muslims as Allah willed gathered around him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah Almighty and extolled Him as befits Him, then he said: "Now then, O people! Every claim of blood (that is, every case of killing) from the Age of Ignorance is void, and the first of your cases to be declared void is the killing of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith, who was a nursing child among Banu Layth and was killed by the tribe of Hudhayl. Every usury (riba) from the Age of Ignorance is remitted, and the first of your usury that I remit is the usury of Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) (the usury he was due to take from people). O people! Time is running in the same way as it was on the day Allah Almighty created the heavens and the earth. Indeed, the number of months is twelve, of which four are sacred: Rajab of Mudar, which comes between Jumada al-Thani and Sha'ban, Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram. That is the upright religion, so do not wrong yourselves in these months. 'Indeed, the postponement (of the sacred months) is only an increase in disbelief, by which those who disbelieve are led astray; they make it lawful one year and forbidden another year, so as to match the number of what Allah Almighty has made sacred.'" The narrator says: They would declare the month of Safar lawful one year and declare Muharram sacred another year; that is the postponement (al-nasi'). "O people! Whoever has a deposit with him, let him return it to the one who entrusted him with it. O people! Satan has despaired of being worshipped in your land until the end of time, but he will be content with petty deeds from you, so be on guard, for the sake of your religion, against petty deeds. O people! Women are bound to you; you have taken them as a trust from Allah Almighty and made their private parts lawful for yourselves by the command of Allah Almighty. You have a right over them and they have a right over you. Among your rights over them is that they do not let anyone other than you onto your bedding and that they do not disobey you in what is good. If they do that, then you have no case against them, and their provision and clothing are to be given to them in a fitting manner. If you strike them, then strike in a way that leaves no mark. It is not lawful for any person to take anything from his brother's wealth, except what that brother gives willingly. O people! I am leaving among you something which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: it is the Book of Allah, so act upon it. O people! Which day is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred day." He asked: "Which city is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred city." He asked: "Which month is this?" The people said: "It is a sacred month." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then Allah Almighty has made your lives, your wealth and your honour inviolable, just as this day is inviolable in this month and in this city. Beware, let those of you who are present convey it to those who are absent. There will be no prophet after me and no nation after you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands and said: "O Allah! Bear witness." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A part of this narration is reported in the Sahih and other books.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain contains Musa bin Ubaydah, who is da'if (weak).
