Hadith Beginning with the Letter Alif (أ)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man sits between a woman's four limbs and the circumcised part touches the circumcised part (the private parts meet), then the ritual bath (ghusl) certainly becomes obligatory."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you perfume the deceased with incense, do so an odd number of times."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When Allah Almighty gathers the first and the last on the Day (of Resurrection) about which there is no doubt, a caller will call out: Whoever did a deed for Allah but associated someone else with Him in it, let him seek the reward for his deed from that (partner), for Allah Almighty is, of all partners, the most free of need of partnership."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When Allah Almighty gathers the first and the last on the Day of Resurrection, a banner will be raised for every betrayer (deceiver), and it will be said: This is the sign of the treachery and betrayal of so-and-so, son of so-and-so."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When something troubles your heart (that is, raises doubt), leave it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a child who has not reached puberty performs Hajj, it counts for him as a (voluntary) Hajj until he comes of age (reaches puberty); when he reaches puberty, another (obligatory) Hajj is due from him. And when a Bedouin performs Hajj, it is a Hajj for him; then when he migrates, another Hajj is due from him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man says something and then looks around (to see that no one is listening), it is a trust (with the one who heard it)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you is faced with an important matter which he fears he will miss, let him pray in this way, that is, let him combine two prayers (together)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you has performed his (obligatory) prayer in the mosque, let him also set aside a portion of his (voluntary and sunnah) prayer for his home, for Allah Almighty will bring about good in his home through the blessing of his prayer."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the scholars come before their Lord on the Day of Resurrection, Mu'adh bin Jabal will be ahead of them (all) by the distance of a stone's throw."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the time of death approaches the believer, the angels of mercy come to him with a white silk cloth and say: O soul, come out, pleased (with Allah) and with Allah pleased with you, to rest and fragrance and to a Lord who is not angry with you at all. So it comes out like the finest scent of musk, until the angels pass it from hand to hand among themselves, and they bring it to the gate of heaven, and the angels there say: How pure is this fragrance that has come to you from the earth! Then those angels take it to the souls of the other believers, and they rejoice at its arrival more than any of you rejoices when an absent loved one returns to him. Then they (the souls already there) ask it: What did so-and-so do? How is so-and-so? And the angels say: Leave him for now, for he was in the grief and hardships of the world. Then when the arriving soul says to them: So-and-so (who had died in the world), did he not come to you? they reply: He was taken to his abode, Hawiyah (Hell). And when the time of death approaches the disbeliever, the angels of punishment come to him with a sackcloth (a coarse cloth) and say: Come out, displeased (with Allah) and with wrath sent down upon you, to the punishment of Allah. So it comes out like the most foul stench of a carcass, until the angels bring it to the gate of the earth, and the guards say: What a foul stench this is! Until they take it to the souls of the disbelievers."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you are present with a dying person, say good things (supplicate for good), for the angels say Amin to whatever you say."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you go to your dying ones, close their eyes, for the eyes follow the (departing) soul; and say good things, for the angels say Amin to whatever the people of the household say."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a ruler (or judge) exerts himself in reasoning (ijtihad) when judging and reaches the correct conclusion, he has a double reward; and if he exerts himself in reasoning when judging and errs, he has one reward (for his ijtihad)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you judge, act with justice and fairness; and when you take a life (in retribution, slaughter and the like), do it in the best manner, for indeed Allah Almighty is doer of good and loves those who do good."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you swears an oath (or states something with certainty), let him not say: 'What Allah willed and you willed,' but rather let him say: 'What Allah willed, then what you willed.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you sees a bad dream, let him not tell people about this play of Satan with him in his sleep."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you has a fever, let him pour cold water over himself at the time of suhur for three nights."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you circumcise (women), do not cut (the skin) excessively, for that (method) is more pleasurable for the woman and more beloved to the husband."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man, on leaving his house, recites this supplication: 'Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'ala Allah, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (In the name of Allah, I have put my trust in Allah; there is no power to avoid sins and no strength to do good deeds except by Allah's enabling), it is said to him: That is sufficient for you; you have been guided, you have been sufficed, and you have been protected (from every evil). So Satan moves away from him, and one devil says to another devil: How can you get at a man who has been guided, sufficed and protected?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When three people set out on a journey, they should appoint one of themselves as their amir (leader)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any woman among you goes out to the mosque, she must not go near perfume (that is, she should not go out wearing perfume)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a curse leaves the mouth of a person, it looks (towards the one who was cursed); if it finds a way to reach that person (that is, if he deserves it), then so be it; otherwise it returns to the very person from whose mouth it came."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a woman (wearing perfume) is about to go out to the mosque, she should bathe on account of that perfume (to remove its trace) just as she bathes on account of major ritual impurity (janabah)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the soul of a believing servant departs, two angels receive it and ascend with it (the narrator mentioned its pleasant fragrance), and the angels of the heaven say: 'A pure soul has come from the direction of the earth; may Allah's mercy be upon you and upon the body you used to inhabit.' Then it is taken to its Lord, and the command is given: 'Take it to its final abode.' And when the soul of a disbeliever departs (the narrator mentioned its foul stench), the inhabitants of the heaven say: 'An evil (impure) soul has come from the direction of the earth.' Then it is said: 'Take it to its final abode.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you are about to leave your house, pray two rak'ahs; they will protect you from going out to evil. And when you enter your house, pray two rak'ahs; they will protect you from entering into evil."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you sends a marriage proposal to a woman, then if it is possible for him to see something of her (some quality or a glimpse of her) that would encourage him to marry her, let him certainly do so."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you proposes marriage to a woman, there is no sin on him in looking at her, provided that he is looking at her solely with the intention of marriage, even if the woman is not aware (of his looking)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you circumcise (women), cut only a little and do not cut from the root (that is, do not go to excess), for this is better for the radiance of the face and more pleasing to the husband."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you circumcise (women), cut only a small part and do not remove it from the root, for this increases the radiance of the face and is more attractive (and pleasurable) in the husband's eyes."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the believers have crossed over (the bridge of) Hell, they will be held back on a bridge between Paradise and Hell, and they will take retribution (qisas) from one another for the wrongs they committed against each other in the world, until, when they have been completely purified and cleansed, they will be given permission to enter Paradise. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Each one of them will know the way to his home in Paradise better than he knew the way to his home in the world."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a hide is tanned, it becomes pure."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the skin of a dead animal is tanned, that is sufficient for it, so let use be made of it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you enters the mosque, he should not sit down until he has prayed two rak'ahs (tahiyyat al-masjid)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you enters the mosque, he should send salutations of peace upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recite this supplication: 'Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik (O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy),' and when he leaves, he should send salutations of peace upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recite this supplication: 'Allahumma i'simni min al-shaytan (O Allah, protect me from Satan).'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you enters the mosque, he should send salutations of peace upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recite this supplication: 'Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik (O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy),' and when he leaves, he should send salutations of peace upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recite this supplication: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik (O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty).'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you enters the mosque, he should send blessings (durood) upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recite this supplication: 'Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik (O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy),' and when he leaves, he should send salutations of peace upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recite this supplication: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik (O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty).'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you comes to a gathering of people and room is made for him, he should sit there, for this is an honour from Allah with which his Muslim brother has honoured him. And if room is not made for him, he should look for the most spacious place and sit there."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you visits his Muslim brother and he feeds him some of his food, he should eat it and not ask about it (its nature or whether it is lawful); and if he gives him some of his drink, he should drink it and not ask about it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man enters his house and mentions the name of Allah Almighty upon entering and when eating, Satan says (to his companions): 'There is no place to spend the night for you here, nor any supper.' And when he enters and does not mention the name of Allah upon entering, Satan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night.' And if he does not mention the name of Allah when eating either, Satan says: 'You have found both a place to spend the night and supper.'"
