Then he came and greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam; he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned his greeting, then said: "Go back and pray again, for you have not prayed." The narrator said: So he went back and prayed, then came and greeted him with salam; he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned the greeting, then said: "Go back and pray again, for you have not prayed." He repeated this a third or a fourth time as well, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying the same thing he had said first. The man said: O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you! By the One who sent down the Book upon you, I have tried and striven hard, so teach me and show me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you want to pray, perform ablution well, then face the qiblah and say Allahu Akbar, then recite, then bow until you are at rest in bowing, then raise your head until you are standing straight, then prostrate until you are at rest in prostration, then raise your head until you are at rest in sitting, then prostrate until you are at rest in prostration, then rise. Ali bin Yahya bin Khallad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, from his uncle Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu al-Walid added in his narration that Rifa'ah and Malik were two brothers from the people of Badr. He said: Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting and looking around him when he saw a man who faced the qiblah and prayed two rak'ahs. And Hajjaj said in his narration: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and entered the mosque. When he had finished his prayer, he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people with salam, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And upon you too. Go back and pray again, for you have not prayed." The narrator said: So he went back and prayed, paying attention to his prayer, but he did not know what was faulty in it. When he finished his prayer, he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people with salam, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go back and pray again, for you have not prayed." The narrator said: And this was repeated twice or three times. The man said: I do not know what fault you have found in me. The narrator said: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer of any of you is not complete until he performs ablution thoroughly as Allah has commanded him: he washes his face and his hands up to the elbows, and wipes his head and his feet up to the ankles; then he proclaims Allah's greatness (takbir) and praises Him, and recites from the Qur'an whatever Allah has permitted him and made easy; then he says takbir and bows, placing his palms on his knees until his joints are at rest and relaxed; then he says: Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him), and stands up straight until every bone takes its place, and straightens his back; then he says takbir and prostrates, settling his forehead firmly (Hammam said: and sometimes he said: settling his face firmly) on the ground until his joints are at rest and relaxed; then he says takbir, raises his head, sits upright on his seat and straightens his back." In this way he (peace and blessings be upon him) described the prayer until he finished, then said: "The prayer of any of you is not complete until he does this." These are the words of Hajjaj's narration.

He said: O Messenger of Allah, after two or three times I have spared no effort in completing my prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer of no person is complete until he performs ablution, making the water reach its proper places, then says: Allahu Akbar, then praises and extols Allah Almighty and recites whatever is easy from the Qur'an, then says takbir until his joints are at rest, then says: Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him), until he stands up straight, then says takbir and prostrates until his joints are at rest, then raises his head until he sits upright, then prostrates until his joints are at rest. Then bow and place your palms firmly on your knees, then raise your head until your back is straight, then prostrate and place your forehead firmly on the ground, then keep doing the same. Ubayd bin Rifa'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give admonitions to the people, and in his gathering he said: When a man has intercourse with a woman and there is no ejaculation, ghusl is not obligatory on him; he should wash his private part and perform ablution. A man from the gathering stood up and mentioned this to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Bring him to me so that I may be a witness against him. When he came to him, he said: O enemy of your own self! You are misguiding people without knowledge. He said: O Commander of the Believers, by Allah, I did not invent this myself; rather, I heard it from my uncles. He said: Which uncles? He said: Ubayy bin Ka'b, Rifa'ah bin Rafi' and Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with them). Sayyiduna Rifa'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was present, said: O Commander of the Believers, do not rebuke him; by Allah, we used to do this in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Do you know whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know anything about that? He said: No. Then Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Commander of the Believers, this matter is not right. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After you, the people of Badr, the best of people, whom shall I ask? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Send to the Mothers of the Believers. So he sent to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: I have no knowledge of it. Then he sent to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: When the circumcised part passes beyond the circumcised part, ghusl becomes obligatory. Then they became engaged in discussing coitus interruptus ('azl), and they said: There is no harm in it. Then a man whispered to his companion, and he (Umar) asked: What is this whispering? He said: One of them claims that this 'azl is the minor burying alive (of a baby girl). Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It cannot be burying alive until it has passed through seven stages. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said: 'And indeed We created man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a drop of fluid in a secure resting place. Then We made the drop into a clinging clot, then We made the clot into a lump of flesh, then We made the lump into bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, then We brought him forth as another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators' [Surah al-Mu'minun: 12-14]." Al-Harith bin Hisham caught hold of him, thinking that he was Suraqah bin Malik, so he (Iblis) struck al-Harith on the chest with his fist and threw him down, then went out fleeing until he threw himself into the sea, raised both his hands and said: I ask You for the respite You granted me; and he feared that the killing would reach him. Then Abu Jahl bin Hisham came forward and said: O people, do not let Suraqah's abandoning you defeat you, for he had an agreement with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); and do not let the killing of Utbah, Shaybah and al-Walid frighten you, for they were hasty. By al-Lat and al-Uzza, we will not return until we have bound them with ropes. I must not find any man among you who has killed one of them; rather, seize them, so that you may make them realise the evil of what they did in leaving you and turning away from al-Lat and al-Uzza. Then Abu Jahl recited this verse:
What fault can a fierce war find with me?
I am a full-strength (bazil) camel of two years, young in age;
For the like of this did my mother give birth to me.
