Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 4506 — from his father, from his uncle; he said

Ali bin Yahya bin Khallad al-Zuraqi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, from his uncle; he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque when a man was praying in a corner of the mosque. The narrator said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was watching him while he was unaware of it. When he finished his prayer, he came towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), stood before him and greeted him with salam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned his greeting, then said: "Go back and pray again, for you have not prayed." So he went back and prayed, then came and greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam; he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned the greeting, then said: "Go back and pray again, for you have not prayed." He did this two or three times. The man said: By the One who sent down the Book upon you with the truth, I have tried and striven hard, so show me and teach me, O Messenger of Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you want to pray, perform ablution, and perform it well as Allah has commanded, then recite, then bow until you are at rest in bowing, then raise your head until you are standing straight, then prostrate until you are at rest in prostration, then raise your head until you are sitting upright, then prostrate until you are at rest in prostration, then stand up. If you complete your prayer in this way, it is complete, and if you fall short of any of it, that shortfall will be from your prayer."
