Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Iblis saw what the angels were doing to the polytheists on the day of Badr, he feared that the killing would reach him too. Al-Harith bin Hisham caught hold of him, thinking that he was Suraqah bin Malik, so he (Iblis) struck al-Harith on the chest with his fist and threw him down, then went out fleeing until he threw himself into the sea, raised both his hands and said: I ask You for the respite You granted me; and he feared that the killing would reach him. Then Abu Jahl bin Hisham came forward and said: O people, do not let Suraqah's abandoning you defeat you, for he had an agreement with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); and do not let the killing of Utbah, Shaybah and al-Walid frighten you, for they were hasty. By al-Lat and al-Uzza, we will not return until we have bound them with ropes. I must not find any man among you who has killed one of them; rather, seize them, so that you may make them realise the evil of what they did in leaving you and turning away from al-Lat and al-Uzza. Then Abu Jahl recited this verse:
What fault can a fierce war find with me?
I am a full-strength (bazil) camel of two years, young in age;
For the like of this did my mother give birth to me.
