Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "At one of the gates of heaven an angel says: 'Who will lend today, so that he may be repaid tomorrow?' And at another gate an angel says: 'O Allah! Give the one who spends a replacement for it, and bring ruin to the wealth of the one who withholds!'"
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with two chains; one of the two chains contains al-Miqdam bin Dawud, who is da'if (weak), though Ibn Daqiq al-Id said: He has been declared trustworthy.

Abu al-Bakhtari narrates from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the people: 'What is your opinion about the wealth that has been left over from this wealth?' The people said: 'O Commander of the Faithful! Because of us you are unable to give time to your family, your land and your trade, so this wealth should go to you.' Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me: 'What do you say?' I replied: 'The people have already given you their advice.' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: 'You say something too!' So I said: 'Why do you turn your certainty into conjecture?' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'You must justify what you have said.' I said: 'Very well, by Allah! I shall justify what I have said. Do you remember when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent you to collect the zakah, and you came to Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), and he did not give you his zakah, and an argument took place between the two of you? You said to me: "Come with me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!" When we came, we found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) troubled, so we went back. The next day we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found him in a pleasant mood. You told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the conduct of Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to you: "Do you not know that a man's paternal uncle is like his father?" Then we mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the previous day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had been troubled, and that today the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a pleasant mood. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The previous day, when the two of you came to me, two dinars of the charity wealth had remained with me, and it was because of them that I was troubled, as you saw; and today, when the two of you came to me, I had already spent them, and that is why you see me in a pleasant mood."' At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)): 'You have spoken the truth, by Allah! And I shall surely be grateful to you in this world and in the Hereafter.'"
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that Abu al-Bakhtari heard neither from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) nor from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so this report is mursal (with a missing link) and sound. Abu Ya'la also recorded it in the same way, but he added these words: "I said: 'Why do you turn your certainty into conjecture and your knowledge into ignorance?' He said: 'Either you justify what you have said, or I shall punish you.' (Later) he said: 'I shall surely be grateful to you in this world and in the Hereafter.' So I said: 'O Commander of the Faithful! Why did you hasten to mention the punishment and delay the gratitude?'" Bazzar also recorded it in the same way, but he narrated these words: (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "When the two of you came to me, I had some dinars which I had distributed, and seven of them were left over."

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to my house, and his blessed face was changed. I thought that perhaps it was because of some pain, so I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Why is your face changed?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It is because of the seven dinars that were brought to us yesterday evening; the evening has passed, and they are lying in the corner of the bed.'"

Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Some wealth was brought to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he distributed it among the Muslims. Some of that wealth was left over, and he sought advice about the leftover wealth. The people said: "If you were to keep it aside for some emergency that may arise, that would be appropriate." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent during this and did not say anything. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abu al-Hasan! Why have you not said anything?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The people have already told you." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You must say something to me too." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed Allah Almighty has already finished with the distribution of this wealth." Then he mentioned the hadith about the wealth of Bahrain, when that wealth came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the night came between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and its distribution. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered all the prayers in the mosque, and I saw distress in the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, concerning that wealth) until he was done with it (that is, when he had finished, his distress went away). At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Now it is necessary that you yourself distribute this wealth." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) distributed that wealth. The narrator said: Eight hundred dirhams of it came to my share.
Bazzar recorded it, and its chain contains al-Hajjaj bin Artah, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain).

Sayyiduna Ubaydullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "O my nephew! I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), holding his (peace and blessings be upon him) hand, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: 'O Abu Dharr! I would not like the mountain of Uhud to become gold and silver for me, and that I keep spending it in the cause of Allah, until on the day I die I have left behind a single qirat of it.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! (A qirat, or) a qintar?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Abu Dharr! I am going towards the less and you are going towards the more; I want the Hereafter and you want this world. (I said:) a qirat.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated it to me three times."
Bazzar recorded it, and Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, but at its beginning he narrated these words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'Which mountain is this? O Abu Dharr! Which mountain is this?' I replied: 'It is Uhud.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'By the One in whose hand my soul is! I would not like to have pieces of gold,'" after which the narrator mentioned the hadith as before. The chain of Bazzar is hasan (sound).

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him permission to enter, and he had a staff in his hand. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Ka'b! Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) has passed away and has left wealth behind. What is your opinion about it?" Ka'b replied: "If he fulfilled the right of Allah Almighty regarding that wealth, then there is no harm upon him." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his staff, struck Ka'b with it and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "I would not like this mountain to become gold for me, and I keep spending it and it keeps being accepted from me, and then I leave behind six uqiyahs of it." (Then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) "O Uthman! I ask you by Allah, did you hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He asked this three times, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes!"

Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, whom more than one scholar has declared da'if (weak).

Abu Ya'la recorded it in al-Kabir, and he narrated these words: "Ka'b said: 'I have found in the Torah what I narrated to you, and Allah Almighty has said: "Allah erases what He wills," to the end of the verse.' He said: 'Allah Almighty has erased it, and I seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty.'"

In one narration the words are: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal! Give us some dates to eat." So he gave him several handfuls. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal! Give us more!" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I gave him more three times, then I said: "Now only what I have kept aside for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remains." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal! Spend, and do not fear any scarcity from the Owner of the Throne."
Tabarani recorded it, and Bazzar recorded it in abridged form, but he narrated these words: "He had a heap of wealth." In the first narration of Tabarani and in the chain of Bazzar there is Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zabalah, and in the second narration there is Talhah bin Zayd al-Qurashi, and both of them are da'if (weak). Bazzar said: What is correct in this is that it is narrated from Masruq that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whenever Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) finished a prayer, he would sit for the people; whoever had some business with him would speak with him, otherwise he would get up. One day I came to his door and said: "O Yarfa'!" He (the servant) came out, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was also at the door. Then Yarfa' came out and said: "O Ibn Affan! Get up; O Ibn Abbas! Get up (that is, both of you come inside)." We went in to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he had a heap of wealth with him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I looked over the people of Madinah, and I saw that the two of you have the largest families (that is, the most dependants), so take this wealth and distribute it. If any of it is left over, return it." I said: "And if it falls short, will you give us more?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "An old rough waterskin! I know that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his family used to eat only a meagre amount." I said: "Yes! By Allah! If Allah Almighty had granted such conquests to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he would have acted differently from the way you have acted." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and his body began to tremble. He said: "What would the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) have done?" I said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) would have eaten himself and fed us as well." Then Sayyiduna Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) anger subsided.
Bazzar recorded it, and its chain is jayyid (good).

Al-Hasan said: Sayyiduna Qays bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "This is the chief of the people of the desert." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the wealth regarding which no liability falls upon me, whether from a guest or from dependants, however many they may be?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good wealth is forty, and if it is more, then sixty; but woe to the owners of hundreds" (he said this three times; and then he said:) "except the one who gives in hardship and in ease, lends his mount to be ridden, lends his stud for mating, slaughters the fat animal, gives its milk as a gift, and feeds the content poor and the one who asks." The narrator said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! How noble and how excellent these traits are!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How do you give the gift (of milch animals)?" I said: "Every year I give one hundred (animals) as a gift." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How do you lend animals temporarily for riding?" I replied: "I do not lend the young milk-giving camel or the aged she-camel." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How do you give animals for mating?" I replied: "My camels go out and the people go out, and whoever wishes takes hold of the head of whichever camel he wants and leads it away." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is your own wealth dearer to you, or the wealth of your mawali (heirs)?" I replied: "No! Rather my own wealth (is dearer to me)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your share of your wealth is only what you eat and use up, or wear and wear out, or give (in the cause of Allah) and send ahead." The narrator said: I asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Is it so?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" So he said: "By Allah! If I remain alive, I shall surely reduce their number (that is, I shall surely spend my wealth in the cause of Allah)." Bazzar recorded it as a mursal report (with a missing link); he also recorded it as a connected report, but in a greatly abridged form, and this report is mentioned in the chapter on his virtues.

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu al-Qayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with some dates. His paternal uncle got up and went to him, intending to take a handful of dates from him and place them before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but that man gathered up the dates (and covered them). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Increase him in miserliness!" The narrator said: So he became the most miserly of people.
Bazzar recorded it with two chains, one of which is connected, and this is its text. The other report is narrated from Sa'id bin Jumhan: "His master, Sayyiduna Abu al-Qayn (may Allah be pleased with him), passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Tabarani recorded it, but he narrated these words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached out his hand towards him in order to take a handful of dates from him and place them before his Companions." The narrators of the mursal report and of the musnad report are the narrators of the Sahih, except Sa'id bin Jumhan, whom more than one scholar has declared thiqah (trustworthy), although there is disagreement about him. (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Hadiths about generosity and miserliness have already passed in the Book of Voluntary Charity.
