Abu al-Bakhtari narrates from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the people: 'What is your opinion about the wealth that has been left over from this wealth?' The people said: 'O Commander of the Faithful! Because of us you are unable to give time to your family, your land and your trade, so this wealth should go to you.' Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me: 'What do you say?' I replied: 'The people have already given you their advice.' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: 'You say something too!' So I said: 'Why do you turn your certainty into conjecture?' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'You must justify what you have said.' I said: 'Very well, by Allah! I shall justify what I have said. Do you remember when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent you to collect the zakah, and you came to Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), and he did not give you his zakah, and an argument took place between the two of you? You said to me: "Come with me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!" When we came, we found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) troubled, so we went back. The next day we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found him in a pleasant mood. You told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the conduct of Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to you: "Do you not know that a man's paternal uncle is like his father?" Then we mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the previous day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had been troubled, and that today the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a pleasant mood. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The previous day, when the two of you came to me, two dinars of the charity wealth had remained with me, and it was because of them that I was troubled, as you saw; and today, when the two of you came to me, I had already spent them, and that is why you see me in a pleasant mood."' At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)): 'You have spoken the truth, by Allah! And I shall surely be grateful to you in this world and in the Hereafter.'"
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that Abu al-Bakhtari heard neither from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) nor from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so this report is mursal (with a missing link) and sound. Abu Ya'la also recorded it in the same way, but he added these words: "I said: 'Why do you turn your certainty into conjecture and your knowledge into ignorance?' He said: 'Either you justify what you have said, or I shall punish you.' (Later) he said: 'I shall surely be grateful to you in this world and in the Hereafter.' So I said: 'O Commander of the Faithful! Why did you hasten to mention the punishment and delay the gratitude?'" Bazzar also recorded it in the same way, but he narrated these words: (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "When the two of you came to me, I had some dinars which I had distributed, and seven of them were left over."
