Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17754

Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Some wealth was brought to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he distributed it among the Muslims. Some of that wealth was left over, and he sought advice about the leftover wealth. The people said: "If you were to keep it aside for some emergency that may arise, that would be appropriate." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent during this and did not say anything. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abu al-Hasan! Why have you not said anything?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The people have already told you." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You must say something to me too." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed Allah Almighty has already finished with the distribution of this wealth." Then he mentioned the hadith about the wealth of Bahrain, when that wealth came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the night came between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and its distribution. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered all the prayers in the mosque, and I saw distress in the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, concerning that wealth) until he was done with it (that is, when he had finished, his distress went away). At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Now it is necessary that you yourself distribute this wealth." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) distributed that wealth. The narrator said: Eight hundred dirhams of it came to my share.
Bazzar recorded it, and its chain contains al-Hajjaj bin Artah, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain).
