Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17762

Abdullah bin al-Samit said: I was with Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) when he received his stipend. His slave-girl was with him, and she began making the payments for his needs, and seven were left over. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) instructed the slave-girl to buy copper coins with them. The narrator said: I said: "If you were to keep them aside for some need that may arise, or for a guest who may come to you, that would be appropriate." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "My Khalil (peace be upon him) (that is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) enjoined upon me that whatever gold or silver a person is given is a live coal for its owner until he distributes it in the cause of Allah."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
