Ibn Abi Mulaykah narrates: Sometimes the halter would fall from the hand of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and he would tap the foreleg of his she-camel to make her kneel, and then he would pick up the halter himself. People said to him: "You should have told us, and we would have handed it to you." He said: "My beloved (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me not to ask people for anything."
Ahmad recorded it; the narrator Ibn Abi Mulaykah did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the narrator Abdullah bin al-Mu'ammal has been criticised and has also been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pledge of allegiance from me regarding five things, took a firm covenant from me regarding seven things, and made Allah Almighty a witness over me regarding nine things: that I would not care about the blame of any blamer concerning Allah Almighty. Abu al-Muthanna narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and said: "Would you like to give the pledge of allegiance? You will have Paradise." I said: "Yes!" Then I stretched out my hand, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), laying down a condition for me, said that I must never ask people for anything. I said: "All right." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not even if your whip falls; you will not ask for it either, but will get down yourself and pick it up."

In one narration the words are: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Six days; O Abu Dharr, understand what will be said to you after that." When the seventh day came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I advise you to have taqwa (fear) of Allah Almighty in every respect, in your private affairs and your public ones. When you do something bad, do something good as well. Never ask anyone for anything, even if your whip falls. Do not take a trust into your keeping, and do not judge between two people." Ahmad recorded all of these narrations, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will give the pledge of allegiance?" Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: "On what shall we pledge? Have we not already pledged allegiance to you once, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the condition that you will never ask anyone for anything." Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, what will a person receive in return for that?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Paradise." So Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) pledged allegiance to him (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) in Makkah amid a crowd of people. His whip fell while he was riding; it fell on the shoulder of a man, and that man took it and tried to hand it to him, but he did not take it from him until he himself got down and picked it up.

In one narration the words are: Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among some of his Companions. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed hand and said: "Who will give me the pledge of allegiance?" He said this three times, and no one stood up and came to him except Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him). After this the narrator mentioned the narration as before. Al-Tabarani recorded both narrations in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Ali bin Yazid, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: My intimate friend (peace and blessings be upon him) advised me of seven things: to love the poor; that I stay close to them; that I look at those below me and not look at those above me; that I maintain ties of kinship even if my relatives treat me harshly; that I frequently say 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no power and no strength except through Allah); that I speak the truth even if it is bitter; that I not care about the blame of any blamer concerning Allah Almighty; and that I not ask people for anything. Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir he recorded a similar narration; I think that Imam Ahmad also narrated it. It has another chain which will come in another place, if Allah wills. Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that I have not found any report of al-Sha'bi having heard from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abdullah bin Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. In the chain of both it is mentioned that al-Hasan bin Dhakwan narrated it from Habib bin Abi Thabit. Although Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from the narrator al-Hasan, more than one scholar has declared him da'if (weak), and he did not hear it from Habib; between the two of them is a narrator Amr bin Khalid al-Wasiti, as Ibn Adi reported in the book al-Kamil on the authority of Ibn Sa'id. The narrator Amr bin Khalid was declared a liar by Imam Ahmad, Yahya bin Ma'in and Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, I heard so-and-so and so-and-so praising, and mentioning that you gave them two dinars." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! But the case of so-and-so is not like that. I gave him between ten and one hundred (dinars); why is he saying that? By Allah! One of you takes something from me by begging and tucks it under his armpit." The narrator says: This means he tucks it under his armpit; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant that the thing is fire for him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, then why do you give it to them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What should I do? They insist on it, and Allah Almighty has refused miserliness for me." In one narration the words are: "I gave him between ten and one hundred (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) between ten and two hundred (dinars)."
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded a similar narration; the narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) helped them with two dinars. Then the two of them went out, and they were praising him. I went in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I saw so-and-so and so-and-so; they came out from you, and they were both praising you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But so-and-so should not be saying this; I gave him an amount between ten and one hundred. Why was he saying that? One of you leaves my presence with something tucked under his armpit, and that thing is fire for him." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, then why do you give it to him, when you know that it is fire for him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what should I do? The narrator says: I set out to ask for something, and I found him standing and delivering a sermon. He was saying: "Whoever refrains from begging, Allah Almighty keeps him chaste; whoever seeks to be free of need, Allah Almighty grants him freedom from need; and whoever asks people while he has the equivalent of five awqiyah is counted as one who begs importunately." The narrator says: I thought: the she-camel that this woman (that is, my mother) has is better than five awqiyah, and the she-camel that so-and-so woman has is also better than five awqiyah. So I went back and did not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) for anything.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin al-Hanzaliyyah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: Uyaynah and al-Aqra' asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for something. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) to write a document for the two of them, and the Messenger of Allah had it sealed. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to hand the document over to them. The narrator says: As for Uyaynah, he asked: "What is in it?" He (Mu'awiyah) said: "In it is what I was ordered to write." So he accepted the document and tied it in his turban; he was the more forbearing of the two men. As for al-Aqra', he said: "Shall I carry a scroll when I do not even know what is in it? It would be like the scroll of al-Mutalammis." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of what the two of them had said. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for some need, and he passed by a camel kneeling at the door of the mosque; this was early in the day. When he passed by it again late in the day, he asked: "Where is the owner of this camel?" He was searched for but was not found. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fear Allah Almighty regarding these animals! Ride them when they are sound, and ride them when they are well-fed." Expressing displeasure, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks for something while he has what makes him free of need (of asking) is only increasing the embers of Hell." People said: "O Messenger of Allah, what makes him free of need (of asking)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "His morning or evening meal."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded this narration in abridged form. He mentioned that the man who said: 'Shall I carry a scroll like the scroll of al-Mutalammis?' was Uyaynah; that is, the reverse of this narration.

Al-Tabarani recorded both narrations in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; the narrators of the first narration are the narrators of the Sahih, and the second narration contains a narrator Jabir al-Ju'fi, who has been criticised, and al-Thawri and Shu'bah declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Mas'ud bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A servant keeps on begging while he is well-off, until his face becomes worn out (or spoiled), and he will have no face before Allah Almighty."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin Abi Layla, and he has been criticised.

Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Begging is not permissible for a well-off person; however, he may ask a relative or the ruler."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Abdullah bin Khirash, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) while a group declared him da'if (weak). Imam Abu Dawud, Imam al-Tirmidhi and Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on them) recorded a narration from that Companion, which Zayd bin Uqbah narrated from him. (Its words are:) "Begging is a scratch that a man inflicts on his own face; however, if a man asks the ruler, or asks in a situation where there is no choice but to ask, then the matter is different."

He said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Ahead of you is a difficult mountain pass that the heavily laden will not be able to cross." Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some wealth came from Bahrain. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and gave him some of it. Then he asked: "Shall I give you more?" He replied: "Yes!" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him more. Then he asked: "Shall I give you more?" He replied: "Yes!" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him still more. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Shall I give you more?" He replied: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave some for those after you as well." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and gave me some. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this good for me or bad?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! Rather, it is bad for you." So I returned to him what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had given me, and then I said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, after you (peace and blessings be upon him) I will never accept a gift from anyone." Muhammad bin Sirin narrates: Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah Almighty to grant me blessing." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah, place blessing for him in the dealings of his hand."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith reported from Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Sahih is a different one.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir.

Imam al-Tabarani also recorded a narration from Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the words are: "On the day of the Battle of Hunayn he contributed two horses, and both were killed. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my two horses have been killed, so give me compensation for them.' So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him (something), and he asked him for more." The first narration contains Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki, who has been heavily criticised; it has been said about him that he is saduq (truthful) but makes mistakes.
