Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks for something despite being well-off increases thereby the hot stones of Hell." People asked: "What is meant by being well-off?" He said: "Having the evening meal."
Abdullah bin Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. In the chain of both it is mentioned that al-Hasan bin Dhakwan narrated it from Habib bin Abi Thabit. Although Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from the narrator al-Hasan, more than one scholar has declared him da'if (weak), and he did not hear it from Habib; between the two of them is a narrator Amr bin Khalid al-Wasiti, as Ibn Adi reported in the book al-Kamil on the authority of Ibn Sa'id. The narrator Amr bin Khalid was declared a liar by Imam Ahmad, Yahya bin Ma'in and Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him).
