Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, I heard so-and-so and so-and-so praising, and mentioning that you gave them two dinars." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! But the case of so-and-so is not like that. I gave him between ten and one hundred (dinars); why is he saying that? By Allah! One of you takes something from me by begging and tucks it under his armpit." The narrator says: This means he tucks it under his armpit; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant that the thing is fire for him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, then why do you give it to them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What should I do? They insist on it, and Allah Almighty has refused miserliness for me." In one narration the words are: "I gave him between ten and one hundred (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) between ten and two hundred (dinars)."
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded a similar narration; the narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
