Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4501

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The poor person (miskin) is not the one who goes round (from house to house), or who goes away with a date or two dates, or a morsel or two morsels. Rather, the poor person is the one who refrains from begging, who does not ask people, and whose condition is not noticed so that something might be given to him in charity."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
