It is reported about Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he called for water and performed ablution at al-Maqa'id, washing each limb three times. Then he asked the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Did you see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do it this way? They replied: Yes!
Ahmad recorded it. The hadith of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is in the Sahih, and the narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abu al-Nadr narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) called for water for ablution, and with him at that time were Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) began performing ablution while they watched. He washed his face three times, poured water over his right arm three times, then over his left arm three times, then wiped his head. Then he sprinkled water on his right foot three times and then washed it; then he sprinkled water on his left foot and then washed it three times. Then he said to those present: I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution just as I have performed it now? They replied: Yes! The narrator says: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did this because some report had reached him on the matter.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. The narrator Abu al-Nadr did not hear from any of the Ten (who were given the glad tidings of Paradise). Its chain also contains a narrator, Ghassan bin al-Rabi', whom al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) once declared da'if (weak) and once said: He is salih (acceptable); and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book al-Thiqat.

Humran bin Aban narrates: I saw Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) call for water for ablution while he was at the door of the mosque. He washed both his hands, rinsed his mouth, and put water into his nose. Then he washed his face three times, then washed both his arms up to the elbows three times, then wiped his head and passed his hands over the outer part of his ears, then passed them over his beard. Then he washed both his feet up to the ankles three times. Then he stood and offered two rak'ahs, and then said: I have performed ablution before you just as I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution, and then I offered two rak'ahs just as I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offer them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished those two rak'ahs, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever performs ablution as I have performed ablution, and then offers two rak'ahs without becoming lost in his own thoughts during them, the sins between those two rak'ahs and his prayer of the previous day are forgiven for him." It is reported about Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he called for water for ablution, rinsed his mouth, put water into his nose, washed his face three times, washed both his arms three times, wiped his head, washed his feet, and then laughed. He said: Will you not ask me why I laughed? We said: O Commander of the Believers, why did you laugh? He said: The reason I laughed is that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water for ablution near this place, and he performed ablution just as I have performed it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed just as I laughed, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Will you not ask me why I laughed? We said: O Prophet of Allah, what made you laugh? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I laughed because when a servant performs ablution and washes his face, Allah Almighty removes from him every sin he committed with his face; when he washes his arms, the same happens; when he wipes his head, the same happens; and when he washes his feet, the same happens.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih; it is also in the Sahih in abridged form.

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Quraad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to perform Hajj. I saw that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had gone out to relieve himself, so I followed him (peace and blessings be upon him) with a water-skin, or (the narrator is unsure) perhaps the words are: a cup. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to relieve himself, he would go far away. I sat waiting for him on the path until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came back, and then I said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Will you perform ablution? Here is water for ablution. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards me. He poured water on his hand and washed it, then he put his hand into the water, took a handful of water and poured it once over his arm, then he wiped his head. Then he took water in his fist and poured it over the upper part of his feet, and he sprinkled water with his hand over the upper part of his feet. (Al-Haythami says:) I say: In the "original"
the report is mentioned like this.
Ahmad recorded it; al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ibn Majah recorded only these words from it: "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to relieve himself, he would go far away." Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Whoever performs ablution twice each will have two portions of reward. And whoever performs ablution three times each, that is my way of ablution and that of the Prophets before me."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Zayd al-Ammi, who is da'if (weak), though he has also been declared thiqah (trustworthy). The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. Ibn Majah also recorded a hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) on this, and it is a longer hadith than this one; however, each of the two reports contains things that are not in the other. And Allah knows best.

He said: Very well. Then he called for water for ablution, and a basin and a cup carved from stone were brought and placed before him. He poured water over both his hands and washed both hands thoroughly. Then he rinsed his mouth three times, put water into his nose three times, and washed his face three times. Then he drew out his right arm (from the sleeve) and washed it three times, then washed his left arm three times. Then he wiped his head once, except that he also passed his hands over his ears and wiped them. Then he put both his palms into the water. The narrator says: After this he mentioned the complete hadith.

He poured water over his right hand three times, then put his right hand into the vessel and with it poured water over his left hand three times. Then he put his right hand into the water, took a handful of water, and with it rinsed his mouth and put water into his nose, doing so three times. Then he put both his hands into the vessel, took water in them, and with it washed his face three times. Then he ran his fingers through his beard, wiped the inner part of both his ears, and put his little finger inside his ear so that the water would reach there. Then, with the water left over from his face, he wiped his neck and the underside of his beard. Then he washed his right arm three times, until he washed beyond the elbow, then he washed the left arm in the same way beyond the elbow. Then he wiped his head three times and wiped the outer part of his ears, and with the water left over from his head he wiped his neck and the underside of his beard. Then he washed his right foot three times and ran his fingers between its toes, until the water went above the ankle, and he poured the water up to the shin. Then he did the same with his left foot. Then he took a handful of water in his right palm and poured it over his head until it ran down from the sides of his head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the complete ablution." Then he entered his mihrab, the people formed rows behind him, and he looked to his right and to his left. Al-Haythami says: I say: After this the narrator mentioned the complete hadith. Al-Tabarani recorded this hadith in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar also recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Sa'id bin Abd al-Jabbar, about whom al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He is not strong; and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book al-Thiqat. In the chains of al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani there is a narrator, Muhammad bin Hujr, who is da'if (weak).
