Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1185

Sayyiduna Abu Kahil (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as he was about to perform ablution. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Allah Almighty has granted us much good through you (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) washed both his hands, then rinsed his mouth three times, put water into his nose three times, washed his face three times, and washed both his arms three times. He wiped his head, but did not specify (a number), and he washed both his feet and did not specify (a number). He said: "O Abu Kahil! Put the water of ablution in its proper places, and leave the water remaining from your ablution for your family. Do not leave your family thirsty, and do not put your servant to hardship."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, al-Haytham bin Jammaz, who is matruk (abandoned).
