Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1174

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water for ablution and performed ablution washing each limb once. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the ablution without which Allah Almighty does not accept prayer." Then he performed ablution washing each limb twice and said: "This is the way of ablution of the nations before you." Then he performed ablution washing each limb three times and said: "This is my way of ablution and that of the Prophets before me."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, who is da'if (weak).
