Abu al-Nadr narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) called for water for ablution, and with him at that time were Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) began performing ablution while they watched. He washed his face three times, poured water over his right arm three times, then over his left arm three times, then wiped his head. Then he sprinkled water on his right foot three times and then washed it; then he sprinkled water on his left foot and then washed it three times. Then he said to those present: I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution just as I have performed it now? They replied: Yes! The narrator says: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did this because some report had reached him on the matter.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. The narrator Abu al-Nadr did not hear from any of the Ten (who were given the glad tidings of Paradise). Its chain also contains a narrator, Ghassan bin al-Rabi', whom al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) once declared da'if (weak) and once said: He is salih (acceptable); and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book al-Thiqat.
