Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "Islam is outward, and faith is in the heart." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his blessed hand towards his chest three times, then he said: "Taqwa (God-consciousness) is here, taqwa is here."
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it in full, while al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form. All its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih except the narrator Ali bin Mas'adah, and he too was declared thiqah (trustworthy) by Ibn Hibban, Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, Abu Hatim and Ibn Ma'in, while others declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has distributed your characters among you just as He has distributed your provisions among you. Indeed, Allah Almighty gives the world both to the one He loves and to the one He does not love, but He gives religion only to the one He loves; so whoever He gives religion to (this means) that He loves him. By the One in whose hand is my soul, a servant does not become a Muslim until his heart and tongue become Muslim (or remain sound), and he does not become a believer until his neighbour is safe from his harm." I said: "O Prophet of Allah! What is meant by his harm?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "His deceiving and his wrongdoing. (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) further said:) It does not happen that a man earns wealth unlawfully and then spends from it (in the path of Allah) and it is blessed for him, or that he gives charity from that wealth and it is accepted from him. If he leaves such wealth behind him, that wealth will be his provision for the journey to Hell. Indeed, Allah Almighty does not erase evil with evil; rather He erases evil with good, for an impure thing does not erase an impure thing."
Ahmad recorded it. Some of the narrators of its chain are mastur (of unknown condition), while most of them are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Razin al-Uqayli (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! How will Allah Almighty bring the dead to life?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you ever passed by a land in your region that was barren, and then when you passed by it (again) it had become green and fertile?" Sayyiduna Abu Razin (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the same way (people) will be resurrected." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by faith?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He alone is worthy of worship, He has no partner, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger; that Allah and His Messenger are dearer to you than everything besides them; that being burnt in the fire is more preferable to you than associating anyone with Allah as a partner; and that you love a person with whom you have no tie of lineage, loving him only for the sake of Allah Almighty. When you become like this, the love of faith will enter your heart just as the love of water enters (the heart of) a thirsty person on a scorching day." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! How can I know that I am a believer?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever of my Ummah (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) of this Ummah does a good deed, knowing that it is a good deed and that Allah Almighty will grant him a good reward for it, or whoever commits an evil deed and then seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty for it, knowing that only Allah Almighty can forgive, such a person is a believer."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Sulayman bin Musa, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and Abu Hatim declared thiqah (trustworthy), while others declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and some of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions were with him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you believers?" They remained silent; this happened three times. The last time, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes! We believe in what you have brought to us, we praise Allah in prosperity, we observe patience in trial, and we believe in the decree of destiny." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: "(You are) believers, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, while the narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir has these words: "The last of them, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), submitted: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah!' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'How is that?' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: 'We hope for reward from Allah Almighty.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: '(You are) believers, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!'"
Its chain contains a narrator, Yusuf bin Maymun, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), while most scholars declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Uthman bin Suhayl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came from Makkah (to Madinah), he used to call people to believe in Allah and to affirm Him by speech (he used to call to this); there was no condition of action in it. At that time the qiblah was Bayt al-Maqdis. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emigrated and came to us, and the rulings of the obligations were revealed, Madinah abrogated Makkah (that is, its rulings), and the (sufficiency of mere) speech in this matter (that is, the ruling that verbal affirmation alone suffices for faith, without the condition of action, was abrogated), and (the ruling of) al-Bayt al-Haram (being the qiblah) abrogated Bayt al-Maqdis. So faith became (the name for the combination of) speech and action.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a group (of narrators) whom I do not know.

Yahya bin Sa'id has narrated this statement of Nawfal bin Mas'ud: We came to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Narrate to us a hadith which you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever has three things in him will be made forbidden for the Fire, and the Fire will be made forbidden for him: belief in Allah Almighty, love for Allah Almighty, and that being thrown into the fire and burnt is more preferable to him than returning to disbelief."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This hadith is mentioned from him in the Sahih, but without this wording.
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it. As for Nawfal bin Mas'ud, I have not seen anyone who mentioned his biography, except that al-Mizzi said in the biography of Yahya al-Qattan: He narrated from Nawfal bin Mas'ud, the student of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
