Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I came to the Messenger of Allah and asked: "Who are those who support you in the religion?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "A free man and a slave." I asked: "What is meant by Islam?" (that is, what are the basic teachings of Islam?) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good speech and feeding food." I asked: "What is meant by faith?" The Prophet replied: "Patience and leniency." I asked: "(Which person) is best in Islam?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one from whose tongue and hand the (other) Muslims are safe." I asked: "Which thing of faith (that is, of the believer) is most excellent?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good character." I asked: "Which prayer is most excellent?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one with long standing." I asked: "Which emigration (hijrah) is most excellent?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you dissociate yourself from what your Lord dislikes."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Muslim recorded these words from this narration: "Who is with you in this religion?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A free man and a slave."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Shahr bin Hawshab, who has been declared trustworthy despite the weakness in him.
