Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 171

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and some of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions were with him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you believers?" They remained silent; this happened three times. The last time, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes! We believe in what you have brought to us, we praise Allah in prosperity, we observe patience in trial, and we believe in the decree of destiny." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: "(You are) believers, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, while the narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir has these words: "The last of them, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), submitted: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah!' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'How is that?' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: 'We hope for reward from Allah Almighty.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: '(You are) believers, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!'"
Its chain contains a narrator, Yusuf bin Maymun, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), while most scholars declared him da'if (weak).
