Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: "The jinn used to ascend to the heaven and listen to the revelation. When they heard a word, they would add nine things of their own to it. The original word would be true, but what they added would be false. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, they were prevented from their seats. This was mentioned to Iblis, and before that, stars had not been thrown at the devils. So Iblis said to them: This is because of something that has happened on the earth. So he sent out his troops, and they found the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) standing in prayer between two mountains. They came to him and informed him, and he said: This is the thing that has happened on the earth."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with a group of his Companions, heading for the market of Ukaz. At that time the devils had been blocked from (hearing) the news of the heaven, and flames were being sent against them. So the devils returned to their people, and they were asked: What is the matter with you? They said: A barrier has been placed between us and the news of the heaven, and flames are being sent against us. Their people said: This barrier between you and the news of the heaven has arisen only because of something new that has happened, so spread out through the east and the west of the earth and see what this thing is that has come between you and the news of the heaven. So they spread out through the east and the west of the earth, searching for what had come between them and the news of the heaven. Then those jinn who had gone towards Tihamah came back towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions were at Nakhlah, heading for the market of Ukaz, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading his Companions in the Fajr prayer. When they heard the Qur'an, they listened attentively and said: By Allah, this is what has come between you and the news of the heaven. Then, when they returned to their people, they said: O our people! We have heard a wondrous Qur'an that guides to the right way, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord. So Allah revealed this verse to His Prophet: "Say: It has been revealed to me" [Surah al-Jinn: 1], and what was revealed to him (peace and blessings be upon him) was only this saying of the jinn.

[Surah al-Najm: 20], Satan cast these words upon his (peace and blessings be upon him) tongue: "These are the exalted goddesses, and their intercession is to be hoped for." So when he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, the Muslims and the polytheists all prostrated. Upon this Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that, when he recited (or wished), Satan cast something into it" [Surah al-Hajj: 52], up to His saying: "the punishment of a barren Day" [Surah al-Hajj: 55], meaning the Day of Badr.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The prohibition of wine was revealed concerning two tribes of the Ansar. They drank wine until, when they became intoxicated, they began to tamper with one another. When they sobered up, a man would see the marks (of wounds) on his face, his head and his beard, and would say: My brother so-and-so did this to me; by Allah, had he been kind and merciful towards me, he would not have done this. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: They were brothers with no rancour in their hearts, but (through this incident) rancour arose in their hearts. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Wine, gambling, idols and divining arrows are only filth from the work of Satan, so avoid them so that you may prosper. Satan only wants to cause enmity and hatred between you through wine and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer; so will you not desist?" [al-Ma'idah: 91]. Then some people who were given to overdoing things said: It is filth, yet it is (already) in the belly of so-and-so who was killed on the Day of Badr, and in the belly of so-and-so who was killed on the Day of Uhud. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "There is no blame on those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten" [al-Ma'idah: 93], to the end of the verse.
