Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Alif Lam Mim Tanzil al-Sajdah and Surah Hal ata 'ala al-insan (Surah al-Dahr) in the Fajr prayer on Friday. (The same narration is also reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the same way through another chain.)
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) also narrated: The Muslims used to love that the Romans should prevail over the Persians, because they were People of the Book, and the polytheists used to love that the Persians should prevail over the Romans, because they were idol-worshippers. The Muslims mentioned this to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "They will soon be defeated." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to them (the polytheists), and they said: "Fix a term between us and you; if they (the Romans) prevail, you shall have such and such, and if we prevail, we shall have such and such." So a term of five years was fixed between them, but they did not prevail. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not make it less than ten (years)?" (I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) said this.) Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "Bid'" means less than ten. Then later the Romans prevailed, and this is the meaning of the saying of Allah Almighty: "Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land, and they, after their defeat, will surely prevail within a few years" [Surah al-Rum: 2]. Then the Romans were defeated, and later they prevailed. Allah Almighty says: "To Allah belongs the command before and after, and on that day the believers will rejoice at the help of Allah" [Surah al-Rum: 4].

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a detachment in which Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) was also included. When they reached the people, they found that they had dispersed, and one man who had a great deal of wealth had stayed behind. He said: "I bear witness that there is no god except Allah." Sayyiduna al-Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) lunged at him and killed him. One of his companions said to him: "You have killed a man who said: There is no god except Allah! By Allah, this will certainly be mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So when they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they said: "O Messenger of Allah! A man bore witness that there is no god except Allah, and yet al-Miqdad killed him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call al-Miqdad to me." Then he said: "O Miqdad! You killed a man who said: There is no god except Allah. So what will you do about La ilaha illa Allah (how will you answer for it)?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Then Allah revealed this verse: "O you who believe! When you go forth in the way of Allah, investigate carefully, and do not say to one who offers you peace: You are not a believer, seeking the goods of the life of this world, for with Allah are abundant spoils. You yourselves were like this before, then Allah conferred His favour upon you" [Surah al-Nisa: 94]. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He was a believing man who was hiding his faith among a disbelieving people, and you killed him; and likewise you yourself used to hide your faith in Makkah."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that his father, Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), sent him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on an errand of his. Sayyidah Maymunah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) was his maternal aunt, so he went in to her, but found the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I lay down in her (my aunt Maymunah's) room, and I resolved in my heart to count how many rak'ahs the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came while I was lying in the room after part of the night had passed, and he said: "Has the boy gone to sleep?" Then he took a sheet that was over Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), wrapped part of it around himself and left part of it over her. Then he stood and prayed two rak'ahs at a time until he had prayed eight rak'ahs. Then he prayed witr with five rak'ahs, without sitting between them. Then he sat and praised Allah Almighty abundantly as befits Him. Then his (peace and blessings be upon him) last words were: "O Allah, place light in my heart, place light in my hearing, place light in my sight, place light on my right, place light on my left, place light in front of me, place light behind me, and increase me in light, and increase me in light, and increase me in light."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "The Qur'an was separated from the Dhikr and placed in the House of Honour (Bayt al-'Izzah) in the lowest heaven. Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) kept bringing it down to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), reciting it in measured portions."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said concerning (the verse) "Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree" [Surah al-Qadr: 1]: "The Qur'an was sent down all at once until it was placed in the House of Honour (Bayt al-'Izzah) in the lowest heaven. Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) brought it down to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in response to matters that arose in the lowest heaven, and Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) brought it down to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in response to the words of the servants and their deeds."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first call (adhan) was only instituted so that those who pray may get ready for their prayer. So when you hear the adhan, perform ablution (wudu) thoroughly, and when you hear the iqamah, hasten to the opening takbir, for it is an essential part of the prayer and its completion. And do not race ahead of the reciter in bowing and prostration."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Ansar said among themselves: "If only we could gather wealth for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so that he may keep his hand open and no one would stand between him and it." So they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We wish to gather something for you from our wealth." Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Say: I do not ask you for any reward for it except love for kinship" [Surah al-Shura: 23]. They went out disagreeing. Some of them said: "Did you see what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said?" And some of them said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) only said this so that we would fight on behalf of his (peace and blessings be upon him) household and support them." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Or do they say: He has invented a lie against Allah?" [Surah al-Shura: 24], up to His saying: "And He it is Who accepts repentance from His servants" [Surah al-Shura: 25]. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned them towards repentance with this verse, up to His saying: "And He answers those who believe and do righteous deeds, and gives them more out of His bounty" [Surah al-Shura: 26]. These are the ones who had said this, meaning: repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness.
