Rabah bin al-Harith narrates: A group of people came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at al-Rahbah and said: Peace be upon you, O our mawla. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: How can I be your mawla when you are Arabs? They said: We heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say on the day of Ghadir Khumm: "Whoever's mawla I am, this one (that is, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)) is also his mawla." Rabah says: When they left, I followed them and asked: Who are these people? They said: They were a group of the Ansar, among whom was Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him).
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, but he recorded these words: They said: We heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever's mawla I am, Ali too is his mawla. O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." They said: Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) is present here too. So Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) removed the turban from his face and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever's mawla I am, Ali too is his mawla. O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Amr Dhi Murr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) both narrate: On the day of Ghadir Khumm the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon and said: "Whoever's mawla I am, Ali too is his mawla. O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him; help whoever helps him, and support whoever supports him." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Tirmidhi recorded the hadith of Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam, which contains only these words: "Whoever's mawla I am, Ali too is his mawla."
Al-Tabarani and Ahmad recorded it from Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) alone in abridged form, but at its beginning they recorded these words: We camped with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a valley called Khumm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order for the prayer, and he offered the prayer early. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon, and at that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shaded by a tree from the sun. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you not know (the narrator is unsure whether the words were:) do you not bear witness that I am closer to every believer than his own self? The people replied: Yes, indeed. After that the narrator mentioned the hadith as before. Al-Bazzar also recorded this narration. Its chain contains Maymun Abu Abdullah al-Basri, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) while a group declared him da'if (weak); the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abu al-Tufayl narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered the people at al-Rahbah (or in an open ground), and then said to them: I ask every Muslim man, by Allah, who heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say something on the day of Ghadir Khumm, to stand up. The narrator says: Thirty people stood up before him. The narrator Abu Nu'aym said: Many people stood up and testified that when he took hold of his hand (that is, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the hand of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)), he said: Do you know that I am closer to the believers than their own selves? The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then whoever's mawla I am, this one is also his mawla. O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." The narrator says: I came away from there with some unease in my heart. I met Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) say such and such. He said: What do you object to? I too heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Fitr bin Khalifah, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave instructions about the trees, so the ground beneath them was swept and water was sprinkled there. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us. By Allah, whatever is to happen until the Hour is established, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us about it. Then he said: O people, who is closer to you than your own selves? We said: Allah and His Messenger are closer to us than our own selves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever's mawla I am, this one too is his mawla. By this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of his hand, raised it out, and said: "O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." Dawud bin Yazid al-Awdi reports from his father: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque and the people gathered around him. A young man stood up, came to him and said: I ask you, by Allah, did you hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever's mawla I am, Ali too is his mawla. O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him"? We reached a place called Ghadir Khumm, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had it announced that everyone should gather, so we, the Muhajirun and the Ansar, gathered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood in our midst and said: O people, what do you bear witness to? We said: We bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: And what else do you bear witness to? They said: That Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who is your wali? The people said: Allah and His Messenger are our mawla. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Who is your wali? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on the upper arm of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and made him stand up; then he let go of his upper arm, took hold of his forearm, and said: "Whoever has Allah and His Messenger as his mawla, this one too is his mawla. O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him. O Allah, whoever among the people loves him, be loving towards that person, and whoever detests him, be angry with him. O Allah, after the two righteous ones I find no one other than You to whom I could entrust him in the earth, so decree good for him." Umayrah bin Sa'd narrates: I was present with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when, on the pulpit, he adjured the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that whoever had heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) speak on the Day of Ghadir Khumm should bear witness to it. Twelve men stood up, among them Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them), and they bore witness that they had heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever I am the mawla of, Ali is also his mawla. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir. There is some weakness in its chain.
