Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "You are to me as Sayyiduna Harun (peace be upon him) was to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), except that there will be no prophet after me."
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it, but he recorded these words: "During the expedition of Tabuk, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): 'I am leaving you behind as my deputy over my family.' Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I dislike that the Arabs should say: He abandoned his cousin and stayed behind from him.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Are you not pleased to be to me as Sayyiduna Harun (peace be upon him) was to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), except that there will be no prophet after me?'" Its chain contains Atiyyah al-Awfi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Ahmad and others declared him da'if (weak). The rest of Ahmad's narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to go on a military expedition, he called Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) and ordered him to stay behind in Madinah as his deputy. He said: "I will never stay behind after you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me and called me, and before I could say anything he insisted that I stay behind in his place, so I wept. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why are you weeping?" I said: "I am weeping because of more than one thing. Tomorrow Quraysh will say: How quickly he stayed behind from his cousin and left him unsupported! Another thing that makes me weep is that I wanted to offer myself for jihad in the path of Allah, because Allah Almighty says: 'Nor do they tread any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict any injury on an enemy, except that a righteous deed is recorded for them because of it. Indeed, Allah does not allow the reward of those who do good to be lost.' So I wanted to put myself forward for the reward. And another thing that makes me weep is that I wanted to seek the bounty of Allah Almighty." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for your saying that Quraysh will say: How quickly he stayed behind from his cousin and left him unsupported, you have an example in me. They said (about me too): He is a sorcerer, he is a soothsayer, he is a liar. As for your saying that you want to gain the reward from Allah, are you not pleased to be to me as Sayyiduna Harun (peace be upon him) was to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), except that there will be no prophet after me? As for your saying that you want to seek the bounty of Allah, these are two camel-loads of pepper that have come to us from Yemen. Sell them and benefit from the proceeds, you and Fatimah, until Allah Almighty brings you both something more of His bounty."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Hakim bin Jubayr, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was suffering from an ailment, so I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had me stand in his place, then he stood and began to pray, and he cast the edge of his garment over me. Then he said: "O son of Abu Talib, you have recovered; there is no harm upon you. I have not asked Allah Almighty for anything except that I asked for the like of it for you, and I have not asked Allah Almighty for anything except that He gave it to me, except that I was told: There will be no prophet after you."
