Rabah bin al-Harith narrates: A group of people came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at al-Rahbah and said: Peace be upon you, O our mawla. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: How can I be your mawla when you are Arabs? They said: We heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say on the day of Ghadir Khumm: "Whoever's mawla I am, this one (that is, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)) is also his mawla." Rabah says: When they left, I followed them and asked: Who are these people? They said: They were a group of the Ansar, among whom was Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him).
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, but he recorded these words: They said: We heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever's mawla I am, Ali too is his mawla. O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." They said: Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) is present here too. So Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) removed the turban from his face and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever's mawla I am, Ali too is his mawla. O Allah, love whoever loves him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).
