Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, and I went out to him. I saw that he was ill and had bound a bandage around his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fadl, take my hand." I took his hand until he came to the pulpit and sat on it. Then he said: "Call out to the people to come to me." I went among the people and called out, and the people gathered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah, and then said: "O people, there may be some matters among you that have become binding upon me. So whoever I have struck on the back with a whip, here is my back: let him take his retaliation. Beware! Whoever I have abused, here is my honour: let him take his retaliation. Whoever I have taken wealth from, here is the wealth: let him take his due. Let no one say: 'I fear some resentment from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).' Beware! Holding resentment is not part of my nature, nor is it my way. Beware! The dearest of you to me will be the one who takes his right, if he is owed one, or else forgives me, so that when I present myself before Allah Almighty, I am at peace. Beware! I do not think this will suffice for me until I have stood among you repeatedly." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit and offered the Zuhr prayer. Then he went up on the pulpit again and repeated what he had said about resentment and other matters. Then he said: "O people, whoever has something (of others) with him, let him return it, and let him not say that this is the disgrace of this world. Beware! The disgrace of this world is easier than the disgrace of the Hereafter." A man stood up before him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, you owe me three dirhams." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We will not call anyone who speaks a liar, nor will we make anyone swear an oath. Tell me, how did they come to be owed to you by me?" He said: "Remember the day when a poor man passed by you, and you instructed me to give him this sum?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fadl, give him that sum." Then another man stood up before him and said: "I have three dirhams which I took by misappropriation in the path of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why did you misappropriate them?" He said: "I needed them." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fadl, take them from him." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, whoever fears something about himself, let him stand up, and I will pray for him." A man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I lie a great deal, I am a hypocrite, and I sleep a great deal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and take sleep away from him when he wishes (that is, let him wake whenever he wants)." Then another man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I lie and I am a hypocrite, and there is nothing that I have not committed." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You have disgraced yourself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop, Ibn al-Khattab! The disgrace of this world is easier than the disgrace of the Hereafter." Then he prayed: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and turn his affair towards good." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said something to the people, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umar is with me and I am with him, and after me the truth will be with Umar wherever he is."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar, and at its end he recorded these words: "A man stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am a cowardly man who sleeps a great deal.' The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for him. Sayyiduna Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Later I saw that man, and he was the bravest of us all and slept the least of us all. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the house of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and said to the women the like of what he had said to the men, and then he said: 'Whoever is overcome by something, let him ask us, and we will pray for him.' The narrator says: A woman pointed to her tongue, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for that woman. The narrator says: That woman would sometimes say to me: 'O Aishah, perform your prayer well.'" In the chain of Abu Ya'la there is a narrator, Ata' bin Muslim, whom Ibn Hibban and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), and a group declared da'if (weak); the remaining narrators of Abu Ya'la are thiqat (trustworthy). In the chain of al-Tabarani there are narrators whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate concerning this statement of Allah Almighty (Allah Almighty says): "When the help of Allah Almighty and the victory come, and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in crowds, then glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance." The narrator says: When this surah was revealed to Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "O Jibril, this is notice of my passing." Sayyiduna Jibril said: "The Hereafter is better for you than the first (life), and your Lord will soon give you so much that you will be pleased." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to announce that the people should gather, so the Muhajirun and the Ansar gathered in the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer, then he climbed the pulpit. After praising and extolling Allah Almighty, he delivered a sermon by which hearts trembled and eyes wept. Then he said: "O people, what kind of prophet have I been to you?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, may Allah Almighty reward you well as a prophet for the prophet you have been to us; like a kind father, and like a tender, sincere brother. You conveyed the message of Allah Almighty, delivered His revelation to us, and called to the path of your Lord with wisdom and good admonition. So may Allah Almighty grant you on our behalf the best reward He has ever granted any prophet on behalf of his Ummah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "O assembly of Muslims, I adjure you by Allah, and by the right I have over you: whoever has suffered any wrong from me, let him stand and take his retaliation." But no one stood before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) adjured them a second time, and no one stood before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) adjured them a third time, saying: "O assembly of Muslims, I adjure you by Allah and by my right over you: whoever has suffered any wrong from me, let him stand and take his retaliation from me, before retaliation has to be given on the Day of Resurrection." The narrator says: Then from among the Muslims an aged old man stood up, whose name was Ukkashah. He came stepping over the necks of the Muslims until he stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Had you not adjured us by Allah more than once, I would not have come forward about this. I was with you in a battle. When Allah Almighty granted us victory and helped His Prophet, and we were returning, my she-camel came alongside your she-camel. I dismounted from my she-camel and came forward to kiss your thigh, but you raised the stick and struck it on my side. I do not know whether that was deliberate on your part, or whether you meant to strike the she-camel." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I seek refuge for you in the majesty of Allah from the Messenger of Allah having struck you deliberately. O Bilal, go to Fatimah's house and bring from there the stick that has been stripped (of its leaves)." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) passed out of the mosque with his hand on his head, calling out loudly: "This is the Messenger of Allah giving retaliation against himself!" He knocked on the door of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "O daughter of the Messenger of Allah, hand me the stick that has been stripped (of its leaves)." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: "O Bilal, what does my father want with the stick, when this is neither an occasion of Hajj nor an occasion of battle?" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), you do not know the situation your father is in! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is bidding farewell to the people and is about to depart from this world, and he is giving retaliation against himself." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Bilal, who is the person who would want to please himself by taking retaliation from the Messenger of Allah? O Bilal, in that case tell Hasan and Husayn to stand before this man and give him retaliation, and not let him take retaliation from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator says: He returned to the mosque and handed the stick to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the stick to Sayyiduna Ukkashah (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this, they both stood up and said: "O Ukkashah, we are here before you; take your retaliation from us, but do not take retaliation from the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them both: "O Abu Bakr, sit down; O Umar, you too sit down. Allah Almighty knows your station and your standing." Then Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Ukkashah, I am alive before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); I will not be content that you strike the Messenger of Allah. Here are my back and my belly; take retaliation from me, strike me a hundred lashes if you like, but do not take retaliation from the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, sit down; Allah Almighty knows your station and your intention." Then Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Ukkashah, do you not know that we are the grandsons of the Messenger of Allah, and that taking retaliation from us is like taking retaliation from the Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them both: "Sit down, both of you; you are both the coolness of my eyes. Allah Almighty will not forget this standing of yours." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ukkashah, strike, if you are going to strike." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, when you struck me, there was no cloth over my belly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) removed the cloth from his belly. The Muslims cried out weeping, and the people said: "Will Ukkashah really strike the Messenger of Allah?" When Sayyiduna Ukkashah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the whiteness of the belly of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), gleaming like fine white linen, he bent down and kissed the belly of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Who could be pleased to take retaliation from you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Either strike, or forgive." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I forgive you, in the hope that Allah Almighty will forgive me on the Day of Resurrection." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes to see my companion in Paradise, let him look at this old man." The Muslims stood up and began kissing Sayyiduna Ukkashah (may Allah be pleased with him) between his eyes, saying: "Glad tidings to you! Glad tidings to you! You have attained the lofty ranks and you will have the companionship of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator says: That same day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill. His illness lasted eighteen days, during which people kept coming to visit him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was born on a Monday, was sent (as a prophet) on a Monday, and passed away on a Monday. (Before that,) when Sunday came, his illness grew worse. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the adhan, then he came and stood at the door and called out loudly: "O Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah Almighty; shall I call the iqamah for the prayer?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the voice of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Bilal, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not well." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went into the mosque. When the morning began to brighten, he said: "By Allah, I will not call the iqamah until I take permission from the Messenger of Allah." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went out, came and stood by the door, and called out loudly: "O Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you, and the blessings and mercy of Allah Almighty; it is time for the prayer, may Allah Almighty have mercy on you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the voice of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Bilal, come in. Today the Messenger of Allah is very unwell; tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came out with his hand placed on his head, saying: "Help can be sought only from Allah! Hope has been cut off, and the back has been broken! If only my mother had never given birth to me, and if she did give birth to me, if only I had not lived to see this day of the Messenger of Allah!" Then he said: "O Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, the Messenger of Allah Almighty (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered you to lead the people in prayer." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came forward and began to lead the people in prayer. He was a soft-hearted man, and when he saw that the place of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was empty, he could not control himself and fell down unconscious. The Muslims cried out weeping. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard their clamour and said: "What is this clamour about?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, (this clamour) is because of your absence, from the weeping of the Muslims." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and the son of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), leaned on the two of them and went to the mosque. He led the people in short rak'ahs, then he turned to them with his kind face and said: "O assembly of Muslims, I entrust you to Allah. You are in the grace of Allah and His protection, and after me Allah Almighty is your guardian. O assembly of Muslims, it is binding upon you to keep fearing Allah Almighty and to obey Him steadfastly after me, for I am about to depart from this world. This is the first day of the days of the Hereafter, and the last day of the days of this world." The narrator says: When Monday came, his condition grew worse. Allah Almighty revealed to the Angel of Death: "Descend to My beloved, My chosen servant Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); go to him in the most beautiful form and take his soul with the utmost gentleness." The narrator says: The Angel of Death descended and came and stood at the door in the form of a Bedouin, and then said: "Peace be upon you, O members of the household of prophethood, O people of the mine of the message, to whom the angels keep coming and going! May I come in?" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Answer this man." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "May Allah Almighty reward you for your coming, O servant of Allah; the Messenger of Allah is not well." He called out a second time, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Fatimah, answer this man." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O servant of Allah, may Allah Almighty reward you for your coming; the Messenger of Allah is unwell." Then a third time he called out loudly: "O people of the house of prophethood, O people of the mine of the message, to whom the angels keep coming and going! May I come in? For entering is necessary." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the voice of the Angel of Death and said: "O Fatimah, who is at the door?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah, there is a man at the door asking permission to come in. I have answered him once and then again, and the third time he called out with such a voice that my skin has shivered and my limbs are trembling." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "O Fatimah, do you know who is at the door? This is the destroyer of pleasures, the separator of those who meet, the one who makes wives widows and children orphans, who ruins dwellings and populates graveyards. This is the Angel of Death. O Angel of Death, may Allah Almighty have mercy on you, come in!" The narrator says: The Angel of Death came in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Angel of Death, have you come to me to visit, or to take my soul?" He said: "I have come to you both to visit and to take your soul. Allah Almighty commanded me not to come in to you without permission, and not to take your soul without your permission. If you give permission, well and good; otherwise I will return to my Lord." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Angel of Death, where did you leave my friend Jibril?" He said: "I left him in the lowest heaven, and the angels are offering him condolences concerning you." Then at once Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat by his head. He said: "This is the time of departure from this world, so give me glad tidings: what is there for me with Allah Almighty?" He said: "O beloved of Allah, I give you the glad tidings that I have left the gates of heaven opened, and the angels are standing in ranks, standing in ranks to offer greetings, and standing with fragrance with which, O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), they will welcome your soul." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Praise belongs to the Countenance of my Lord. O Jibril, give me glad tidings." He said: "I give you the glad tidings that the gates of Paradise have been opened, its rivers and its trees are stirring, and its houris have adorned themselves, because your soul, O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), is about to arrive." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Praise belongs to the Countenance of my Lord. O Jibril, give me glad tidings." Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection you will be the first to intercede and the first whose intercession is accepted." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Praise belongs to my Lord." Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "O my beloved, what is it you wish to ask about?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I wish to ask you about my worry and my concern: what will there be for those versed in the Qur'an after me? What will there be for those who fast in Ramadan after me? What will there be for those who perform Hajj to the House of Allah after me? And what will there be for my chosen Ummah after me?" Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "O beloved of Allah, receive the glad tidings that Allah Almighty says: 'I have made Paradise forbidden to all the prophets and their nations until you, O Sayyiduna Muhammad, and your Ummah enter it.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now my heart is content. O Angel of Death, come near and do what you have been commanded to do." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, when you pass away, who will wash you? In what shall we shroud you? Who will lead your funeral prayer? And who will lower you into the grave?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, as for the washing, you are to wash me, Fadl bin Abbas will pour water for you, and Jibril will be the third with you. When you have finished washing me, shroud me in three new garments, and Jibril will bring me hanut (embalming perfume) from Paradise. When you have placed me on the bier, place me in the mosque and go outside. First of all my Lord will send mercy upon me from above His Throne; then Jibril, then Mika'il, then Israfil will pray for mercy; then the angels will come in groups. Then you are to enter and stand in rows, and let no one step forward (ahead of me)." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Today is the day of parting; so when will I meet you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Meet me on the Day of Resurrection at the Pool, where I will be giving drink to those of my Ummah who come to the Pool." She said: "O Messenger of Allah, what if I cannot meet you there?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then meet me at the Scale (al-Mizan), where I will be interceding for my Ummah." She said: "O Messenger of Allah, what if I cannot meet you there?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Meet me at the Bridge (al-Sirat), where I will be calling out: 'O my Lord, save my Ummah from Hell!'" Then the Angel of Death came near and began to take the soul of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When his soul reached his knees, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Oh!" When his soul reached his navel, he said: "Ah, how great the pain is!" Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O my dear father, if only I had this pain in your place!" When the soul of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached his chest, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jibril, how severe the bitterness of death is!" Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) turned his face away from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jibril, do you dislike looking at me?" Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "O my beloved, who could bear to look at you while you are facing the throes of death?" Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) washed him, the son of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) poured the water, and Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) was with the two of them. He was shrouded in three new garments, then placed on a bier, then brought into the mosque and placed in the mosque, and the people went out of the mosque. First of all the Lord sent mercy upon him from above His Throne, then Jibril, then Mika'il, then Israfil, and then the angels kept coming group after group praying for mercy. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We heard a sound in the mosque, but we did not see anyone. We heard an unseen caller saying: "Come in, may Allah Almighty have mercy on you, and pray for mercy for your Prophet." So we went in and stood in rows, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded us. We said the takbirs following the takbirs of Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him), and we offered the funeral prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) following Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him). Not one of us stepped forward ahead of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and the son of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) entered his grave, and he was buried. When the people returned after burying him, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu al-Hasan, have you buried the Messenger of Allah?" They answered: "Yes." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "How could your hearts bear to throw earth upon the Messenger of Allah? Was there no mercy in your hearts for the Messenger of Allah? Was he not the teacher of good?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, O Fatimah, but the command of Allah Almighty cannot be turned back." Then Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) began to weep, saying: "Alas, my dear father! Now the coming of Jibril has ended, that Jibril who used to bring us revelation from the heavens."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Mun'im bin Idris, and he is a kadhdhab (liar) and a fabricator of hadith.

Yazid bin Babanus narrates: My companion and I went to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked permission to come in. She had a cushion placed for us and drew the curtain. My companion asked her about intimacy with a menstruating woman. Then she said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by my door, he would say some word by which Allah Almighty would benefit (people). One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by and said nothing; then he passed by again and said nothing; this happened two or three times. I said (to the slave girl): "Girl, place a cushion for me by the door," and I had bound a bandage around my head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me and asked: "O Aishah, what is the matter with you?" I said: "I am suffering from a headache." He said: "Rather I: oh, my head!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went away, and only a short while passed before he was brought, carried in a cloak. He came in, sent a message to call his other wives, and said: "I have fallen ill, and I am now not able to go round to you; so give me permission to stay with Aishah." The women gave him permission. I began to nurse him during his illness, although I had never nursed anyone before. One day his head was on my shoulder, and meanwhile his head inclined towards my head. I thought that perhaps he wanted something from my head. A cold drop came from his mouth and fell on the hollow of my throat, which made my skin shiver. I thought that perhaps he was falling unconscious, so I covered him with a cloth. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Mughirah bin Shu'bah came and asked permission to come in. I gave them permission and drew the curtain. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "This is a faint! How severe a faint has come over the Messenger of Allah!" Then they stood up. When they reached the door, Mughirah said: "O Umar, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You lie! You are a man whom trial has stirred up. The Messenger of Allah will not pass away until Allah Almighty has destroyed the hypocrites." Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came. He lifted the curtain, looked at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). The Messenger of Allah has passed away." Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the side of his head, removed the cloth from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), kissed his forehead, and then said: "Alas!" Then he said: "Alas for the Prophet!" Then he lifted the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), removed the cloth from his mouth, kissed his forehead, and then said: "O chosen one!" Then he lifted the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), removed the cloth from his mouth, kissed his forehead and said: "Alas, O dear friend! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away." Then he went to the mosque. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was addressing the people and talking, saying that the Messenger of Allah would not pass away until Allah Almighty had finished off the hypocrites. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak. He praised and extolled Allah Almighty and then said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty says: 'Indeed, you will die, and they too will die.'" He recited this verse to its end, then he recited this verse: "Muhammad is only a Messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?" (Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) "Whoever used to worship Allah Almighty, then Allah Almighty is Living and will not die; and whoever used to worship Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), then Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This verse was in the Book of Allah, but it never occurred to me that it was in the Book of Allah." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people, this is Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); he is the elder of the Muslims, so pledge allegiance to him." So they pledged allegiance to him. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this report is mentioned in the "Sahih" and other books.
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar, and he recorded these additional words: "Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came in and asked: 'What do you think?' I said: 'He (peace and blessings be upon him) has fainted.' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came close to him, removed the cloth from his face and said: 'Alas, what a faint! If only this faint had come over me!' He removed the cloth from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and realised that he had died, and he said: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return).' Then he began to weep. I said: 'In the path of Allah, the revelation has been cut off, and Sayyiduna Jibril's (peace be upon him) coming to my house has been cut off.' Then he placed his hands on his temples and his mouth on his forehead, and wept until his tears flowed onto the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he covered the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and went out to the people while he was weeping. He said: 'O assembly of Muslims, does any of you have any word (from him) about the passing of the Messenger of Allah?' The people said: 'No.' Then he turned to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: 'O Umar, do you have any word (from him) about the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?' He replied: 'No.' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'By the One besides whom there is no god, he has tasted death, and he had said to the people: "I am going to die, and you too are going to die."' The people cried out and wept intensely. Then the people left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to his family. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) washed him, while Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) poured the water. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Whatever part of him I forgot to wash would be turned over for me, and I washed it without seeing anyone (turning it).' When they had finished, the people shrouded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a red Yemeni cloak and in two sheets that had been used; they were washed; then he was laid on the bed. Then the people were given permission to come in, and they began to come in group after group, praying for mercy for him without an imam, until there remained no one in Madinah, free or slave, who had not offered the funeral prayer for him (or prayed for mercy for him). Then the people disagreed about burying the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): where should he be buried? Someone said: 'Beside the piece of wood that he used to hold in his hand, beneath his pulpit.' Someone said: 'He should be buried in Jannat al-Baqi', where he used to bury his deceased.' Some people said: 'We will not do that, for then it would happen that whenever the master of a slave or slave girl is angry with him, that person would seek refuge at the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and this would become a custom.' Then they agreed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) should be buried in his house, beneath his very bed, where his soul had been taken. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he was buried with him. When the final hour of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) drew near, he left this instruction: 'When I die, carry my body to the door of the house of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and say to her: "This is Umar bin al-Khattab sending you greetings of peace, and he is asking: shall I come in, or go away?"' Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) remained silent for a while, then she said: 'Bring him in and bury him with them.' (The narrator says:) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is on the right of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is on his left. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had been buried there, I would wrap myself in an outer cloak (when entering the chamber). The narrator says: Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked: 'Why did you wrap yourself in the cloak?' She said: 'Before, there was my husband, and one was my father; when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was buried, I began to wrap myself in the cloak.'" The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy). In the chain of Abu Ya'la there is a narrator, Uwayd bin Abi Imran, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) and the majority declared da'if (weak); some said: He is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyidah Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began in the house of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). His illness became severe, and he would lose consciousness. His wives decided through mutual consultation that medicine should be poured into his mouth, and they poured medicine into his mouth. When he regained consciousness, he said: "Who has done this?" We said: "The women who came from that direction did this," and she pointed towards the land of Abyssinia; Sayyidah Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) was also among those women. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, we feared that you might be suffering from pleurisy (dhat al-janb)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is an illness with which Allah Almighty would not afflict me. Now let medicine be poured into the mouth of everyone present in the house, except the uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)," by which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). The female narrator says: So Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) also had medicine poured into her mouth that day, even though she was fasting; she did so because of the emphatic order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih". (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed in the Book of the Caliphate.

The narrator says: This weighed very heavily upon us. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring me a sheet, so that I may write for you a document after which you will never go astray." The women said from behind the curtain: "Do these people not hear what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is saying?" I said: "You are like the women of the time of Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him): when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill, you squeezed out tears from your eyes, and now when he is recovering, you ride on his neck." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave them alone, for they are better than you."

Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her), who is the mother of the children of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and the sister of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during his illness and began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and asked: "Why are you weeping?" I said: "We are afraid for you, and we do not know, O Messenger of Allah, what situation we will face from the people after you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will be the weak ones after me."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, whom a group declared da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) (that is, Imam Zayn al-Abidin) narrates: I heard my father say: "Before the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him and said: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty has sent me to you to honour you, to show your excellence, and especially for you, so that I may ask you about something which the Lord knows better than you. He says: How do you feel?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Jibril, I feel distressed; O Jibril, I feel in hardship.' When the third day came, Sayyiduna Jibril descended, and the Angel of Death descended with him, and with the two of them was an angel who was in the air, whose name was Isma'il. He was over seventy thousand angels, each of whom was over another seventy thousand angels, and they had come with Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him). Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty has sent me to you to honour you, to show your excellence, and especially for you, so that I may ask you about something which the Lord knows better than you. He is saying: How do you feel?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Jibril, I feel grieved; O Jibril, I feel distressed.' The narrator says: Then the Angel of Death asked permission at the door to come in. Sayyiduna Jibril said: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), this is the Angel of Death asking your permission. He has never asked permission of any human before you, and he will never ask permission of anyone after you.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Give him permission.' Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) gave him permission. He came forward and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty has sent me to you, and He has commanded me to obey you in whatever you command me. If you command me to take your soul, I will take it, and if you dislike it, I will leave it.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'O Angel of Death, will you really do so?' He said: 'Yes, I have been commanded to obey you in whatever you instruct me.' Sayyiduna Jibril said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Allah Almighty is longing to meet you.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Carry out what you have been commanded.' Then Sayyiduna Jibril said to him: 'This is my last time coming down to the earth; in this world my business was only with you.' When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, something came to offer condolence; its arrival could be sensed and its sound was felt, but its form could not be seen. It said: 'Peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah Almighty. Every soul shall taste death. Indeed, with Allah Almighty alone is consolation for every calamity, and from Allah Almighty there is a replacement for everyone who perishes, and a recompense for everything that is lost. So place your trust in Allah Almighty and hope for reward from Him, for the truly afflicted one is he who is deprived of the reward. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah Almighty.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Maymun al-Qaddah, and he is dhahib al-hadith (his narrations are discarded).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Angel of Death came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and asked permission to come in. The head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the lap of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings)." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Go back, for we are busy right now and cannot attend to you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Hasan, do you know who this is? This is the Angel of Death." (Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:) "Come in, rightly guided." When he came in, he said: "Your Lord sends you greetings of peace." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is Jibril?" He said: "He is not near me; he will come shortly." Then the Angel of Death went out, until Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him), standing at the door, asked him: "O Angel of Death, why have you come out?" He said: "Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is asking for you." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became severe, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) were with him. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came in. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he raised his head and said: "Come close to me! Come close to me!" He propped up the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) against himself, and after that he remained constantly with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until he passed away. When that happened, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) got up and closed the door. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and with him were members of the descendants of Abd al-Muttalib, and they stood at the door. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) began to say: "May my father be sacrificed for you! You were pure in life and you are pure in death." A pure fragrance rose up from him, the like of which those people had never found. Then he said: "Come now, stop weeping like women, and turn your attention to your master. Then send Fadl bin Abbas to me." The Ansar said: "We adjure you by Allah, and by the closeness we had to the Messenger of Allah, to take one man from among us inside as well." That man's name was Sayyiduna Aws bin Khawli (may Allah be pleased with him), and he carried a water jar in one hand. They heard a voice in the house saying: "Do not remove the clothes of the Messenger of Allah; wash him in his clothes as he is." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) washed him by putting his hand inside the shirt, Sayyiduna Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) held the garment, and the Ansari man carried the water. On the hand of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was a piece of cloth, which he would put in with his hand under the shirt. Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The soul of every prophet is taken, then he sees the reward, then that soul is returned to him, and then he is given the choice either to have that soul returned, or to go on ahead." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I had remembered this. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was leaning against my chest, and I was looking at him; meanwhile his neck drooped. I thought he had perhaps passed away, but then I remembered what he had said. I looked at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he rose and looked up. I said: "In that case, he (peace and blessings be upon him) will not choose us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I wish for the companionship of the Highest Companion in Paradise, the companionship of those upon whom Allah Almighty has bestowed favour, from among the prophets and the truthful," and he recited the verse to its end.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was in an outlying area of Madinah. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), placed his mouth on the forehead of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), began kissing him and saying: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; you are pure in every state, in life and in death. When he came out, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, saying: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah has not died, and he will not die until he has killed the hypocrites. The narrator said: The hypocrites had rejoiced at the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and had raised their heads. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by him and said: O man! Restrain yourself, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has died. Have you not heard Allah Almighty say: "Indeed, you will die, and indeed, they too will die." "And We did not grant eternal life to any human being before you; so if you die, will they live forever?" The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the pulpit, climbed it, praised and extolled Allah Almighty, and then said: "O people! If Muhammad was your god whom you worshipped, then your god has died; and if your God is the One who is in the heaven, then your God is living and will not die." Then he recited this verse: "Muhammad is but a Messenger; messengers have passed away before him." Then he came down from the pulpit. The Muslims found reassurance in this and were comforted, and the distress of the hypocrites increased. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: By the One in whose Hand is my soul! It was as though there had been a covering over our faces, and it was removed.

Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I saw in a dream that three moons came down into my lap. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If your dream proves true, the three best people of the earth will be buried in your house. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): O Aishah! This is the best of your moons. (The narrator says:) Then (later) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) were also buried in her house.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and these are his words; he also recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The narrators of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are the narrators of the Sahih. Before this, a marfu' hadith has already passed stating that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) related this dream to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave its interpretation; it has passed in the chapter on the interpretation of dreams, and there is weakness in its chain.

Urwah narrates: (The paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) composed these verses as an elegy for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "My soul is grieving, and I have passed the night like one from whom something has been snatched away; I stayed awake all night, as one does who has been struck by war. Because of worries and regret my condition has been ruined. Alas, these worries came to me at the time the news of death came, when people said: Yesterday evening death, according to what destiny had written, came to the Messenger. When we came to the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), even the hair at the back of my head had turned white. When we saw their houses desolate, and that after him the life in those houses is an unfamiliar one, a long grief came upon me because of this, which mingled with my heart so that it is like one terrified." She also said: "O Messenger of Allah! You were our ease, you were kind to us and you were not one who turned away. Our Prophet was kind to us and merciful, so today let everyone who weeps weep for you. By my life, I do not weep over the death of the Prophet; rather I weep over the turmoil that would come after you. Over the absence of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) my heart is such that, because of his love, it has become like a hot branding iron. O Fatimah! May the Lord of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty, send blessings upon him who has made his (final) abode in Yathrib. I have seen Hasan, whom you left orphaned, and he is weeping and calling for his grandfather. May my mother, my maternal aunt, my paternal aunt and I myself be ransomed for the Messenger of Allah. You showed patience and conveyed the message truthfully, and you passed away in a state in which the religion is firm, clear and pure. Had your Lord let you remain among us, it would have been our good fortune; but His decree is fulfilled. Upon you be peace from Allah Almighty as a greeting, and may you be admitted into the Gardens of Eden in a state of contentment."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).
