Urwah narrates: (The paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) composed these verses as an elegy for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "My soul is grieving, and I have passed the night like one from whom something has been snatched away; I stayed awake all night, as one does who has been struck by war. Because of worries and regret my condition has been ruined. Alas, these worries came to me at the time the news of death came, when people said: Yesterday evening death, according to what destiny had written, came to the Messenger. When we came to the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), even the hair at the back of my head had turned white. When we saw their houses desolate, and that after him the life in those houses is an unfamiliar one, a long grief came upon me because of this, which mingled with my heart so that it is like one terrified." She also said: "O Messenger of Allah! You were our ease, you were kind to us and you were not one who turned away. Our Prophet was kind to us and merciful, so today let everyone who weeps weep for you. By my life, I do not weep over the death of the Prophet; rather I weep over the turmoil that would come after you. Over the absence of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) my heart is such that, because of his love, it has become like a hot branding iron. O Fatimah! May the Lord of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty, send blessings upon him who has made his (final) abode in Yathrib. I have seen Hasan, whom you left orphaned, and he is weeping and calling for his grandfather. May my mother, my maternal aunt, my paternal aunt and I myself be ransomed for the Messenger of Allah. You showed patience and conveyed the message truthfully, and you passed away in a state in which the religion is firm, clear and pure. Had your Lord let you remain among us, it would have been our good fortune; but His decree is fulfilled. Upon you be peace from Allah Almighty as a greeting, and may you be admitted into the Gardens of Eden in a state of contentment."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).
