Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was in an outlying area of Madinah. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), placed his mouth on the forehead of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), began kissing him and saying: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; you are pure in every state, in life and in death. When he came out, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, saying: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah has not died, and he will not die until he has killed the hypocrites. The narrator said: The hypocrites had rejoiced at the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and had raised their heads. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by him and said: O man! Restrain yourself, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has died. Have you not heard Allah Almighty say: "Indeed, you will die, and indeed, they too will die." "And We did not grant eternal life to any human being before you; so if you die, will they live forever?" The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the pulpit, climbed it, praised and extolled Allah Almighty, and then said: "O people! If Muhammad was your god whom you worshipped, then your god has died; and if your God is the One who is in the heaven, then your God is living and will not die." Then he recited this verse: "Muhammad is but a Messenger; messengers have passed away before him." Then he came down from the pulpit. The Muslims found reassurance in this and were comforted, and the distress of the hypocrites increased. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: By the One in whose Hand is my soul! It was as though there had been a covering over our faces, and it was removed.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Ali bin al-Mundhir, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
