Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, and I went out to him. I saw that he was ill and had bound a bandage around his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fadl, take my hand." I took his hand until he came to the pulpit and sat on it. Then he said: "Call out to the people to come to me." I went among the people and called out, and the people gathered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah, and then said: "O people, there may be some matters among you that have become binding upon me. So whoever I have struck on the back with a whip, here is my back: let him take his retaliation. Beware! Whoever I have abused, here is my honour: let him take his retaliation. Whoever I have taken wealth from, here is the wealth: let him take his due. Let no one say: 'I fear some resentment from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).' Beware! Holding resentment is not part of my nature, nor is it my way. Beware! The dearest of you to me will be the one who takes his right, if he is owed one, or else forgives me, so that when I present myself before Allah Almighty, I am at peace. Beware! I do not think this will suffice for me until I have stood among you repeatedly." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit and offered the Zuhr prayer. Then he went up on the pulpit again and repeated what he had said about resentment and other matters. Then he said: "O people, whoever has something (of others) with him, let him return it, and let him not say that this is the disgrace of this world. Beware! The disgrace of this world is easier than the disgrace of the Hereafter." A man stood up before him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, you owe me three dirhams." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We will not call anyone who speaks a liar, nor will we make anyone swear an oath. Tell me, how did they come to be owed to you by me?" He said: "Remember the day when a poor man passed by you, and you instructed me to give him this sum?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fadl, give him that sum." Then another man stood up before him and said: "I have three dirhams which I took by misappropriation in the path of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why did you misappropriate them?" He said: "I needed them." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fadl, take them from him." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, whoever fears something about himself, let him stand up, and I will pray for him." A man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I lie a great deal, I am a hypocrite, and I sleep a great deal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and take sleep away from him when he wishes (that is, let him wake whenever he wants)." Then another man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I lie and I am a hypocrite, and there is nothing that I have not committed." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You have disgraced yourself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop, Ibn al-Khattab! The disgrace of this world is easier than the disgrace of the Hereafter." Then he prayed: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and turn his affair towards good." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said something to the people, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umar is with me and I am with him, and after me the truth will be with Umar wherever he is."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar, and at its end he recorded these words: "A man stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am a cowardly man who sleeps a great deal.' The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for him. Sayyiduna Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Later I saw that man, and he was the bravest of us all and slept the least of us all. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the house of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and said to the women the like of what he had said to the men, and then he said: 'Whoever is overcome by something, let him ask us, and we will pray for him.' The narrator says: A woman pointed to her tongue, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for that woman. The narrator says: That woman would sometimes say to me: 'O Aishah, perform your prayer well.'" In the chain of Abu Ya'la there is a narrator, Ata' bin Muslim, whom Ibn Hibban and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), and a group declared da'if (weak); the remaining narrators of Abu Ya'la are thiqat (trustworthy). In the chain of al-Tabarani there are narrators whom I do not know.
