Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14251

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were informed of the passing of our beloved and our Prophet, may my father and my soul be sacrificed for him; this was told six days before his passing. When the time of parting drew near, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered us in the house of the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Tears flowed from his eyes, and then he said: "Welcome to you! May Allah Almighty grant you life, may Allah Almighty protect you, may Allah Almighty give you shelter, may Allah Almighty help you, may Allah Almighty keep you firm on guidance, may Allah Almighty provide for you, may Allah Almighty grant you success, may Allah Almighty keep you safe, may Allah Almighty accept your deeds. I enjoin upon you the fear of Allah Almighty (taqwa), and I commend you to Allah Almighty, and I make Him your guardian. Indeed, I am to you a warner who warns clearly: do not transgress against the command of Allah Almighty among His servants or in His lands, for Allah Almighty has said to me and to you: 'That is the home of the Hereafter, which We have made for those who do not seek exaltation (that is, arrogance) in the land, nor corruption; and the good end is for the God-fearing.' And He also said: 'Is not Hell the abode of the arrogant?'" Then he said: "The time of death has drawn near, and the return is to Allah Almighty, and to Sidrat al-Muntaha, and to Jannat al-Ma'wa, and to the full cup, and to the Highest Companion." The narrator says: I think the narration also has these words: We said: "O Messenger of Allah, in that case, who will wash you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The men of my household, the nearest and then the next nearest." We said: "In what shall we shroud you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In these very clothes of mine, if you wish, or in a Yemeni garment, or in the white cloth of Egypt." The narrator says: We said: "Who among us will lead your funeral prayer?" We began to weep, and he also wept, and he said: "Wait! May Allah Almighty forgive you and reward you well on behalf of your Prophet. When you have washed me and placed me on my bed, keep me in this house and place that bed at the edge of my grave. Then leave me for a while, for the first to pray over me will be my friend and my companion Jibril, then Mika'il, then Israfil, then the Angel of Death along with his hosts, then all the angels. Then come to me in groups, and send blessings and greetings of peace upon me. Do not hurt me through anyone weeping; let no woman scream and let no one wail. The men of my household will begin sending blessings upon me, and after that you. Convey greetings of peace to yourselves from me, and convey greetings of peace to those of my brothers who are not present here. And whoever enters your religion with you after me, I make you witnesses that I send greetings of peace to him, and to everyone who follows me in my religion from this day of mine until the Day of Resurrection." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, who among us will lower you into your grave?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The men of my household, and with them will be many angels; they will be seeing you, but you will not be able to see them."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and he said: This report is also narrated through Murrah from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) with another chain, and the chains from Murrah are close to one another. The narrator Abdur-Rahman did not hear this report from Murrah; he only narrated it on the authority of Murrah. But to our knowledge, no one other than Murrah narrated it from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih", except Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Samurah al-Ahmasi, and he is thiqah (trustworthy). Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in a similar way, except that he recorded the words: This happened one month before the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He mentioned weak narrators in its chain, one of whom is Ash'ath bin Tabiq; al-Azdi says: His hadith is not authentic. And Allah knows best.
