Yazid bin Babanus narrates: My companion and I went to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked permission to come in. She had a cushion placed for us and drew the curtain. My companion asked her about intimacy with a menstruating woman. Then she said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by my door, he would say some word by which Allah Almighty would benefit (people). One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by and said nothing; then he passed by again and said nothing; this happened two or three times. I said (to the slave girl): "Girl, place a cushion for me by the door," and I had bound a bandage around my head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me and asked: "O Aishah, what is the matter with you?" I said: "I am suffering from a headache." He said: "Rather I: oh, my head!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went away, and only a short while passed before he was brought, carried in a cloak. He came in, sent a message to call his other wives, and said: "I have fallen ill, and I am now not able to go round to you; so give me permission to stay with Aishah." The women gave him permission. I began to nurse him during his illness, although I had never nursed anyone before. One day his head was on my shoulder, and meanwhile his head inclined towards my head. I thought that perhaps he wanted something from my head. A cold drop came from his mouth and fell on the hollow of my throat, which made my skin shiver. I thought that perhaps he was falling unconscious, so I covered him with a cloth. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Mughirah bin Shu'bah came and asked permission to come in. I gave them permission and drew the curtain. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "This is a faint! How severe a faint has come over the Messenger of Allah!" Then they stood up. When they reached the door, Mughirah said: "O Umar, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You lie! You are a man whom trial has stirred up. The Messenger of Allah will not pass away until Allah Almighty has destroyed the hypocrites." Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came. He lifted the curtain, looked at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). The Messenger of Allah has passed away." Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the side of his head, removed the cloth from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), kissed his forehead, and then said: "Alas!" Then he said: "Alas for the Prophet!" Then he lifted the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), removed the cloth from his mouth, kissed his forehead, and then said: "O chosen one!" Then he lifted the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), removed the cloth from his mouth, kissed his forehead and said: "Alas, O dear friend! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away." Then he went to the mosque. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was addressing the people and talking, saying that the Messenger of Allah would not pass away until Allah Almighty had finished off the hypocrites. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak. He praised and extolled Allah Almighty and then said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty says: 'Indeed, you will die, and they too will die.'" He recited this verse to its end, then he recited this verse: "Muhammad is only a Messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?" (Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) "Whoever used to worship Allah Almighty, then Allah Almighty is Living and will not die; and whoever used to worship Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), then Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This verse was in the Book of Allah, but it never occurred to me that it was in the Book of Allah." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people, this is Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); he is the elder of the Muslims, so pledge allegiance to him." So they pledged allegiance to him. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this report is mentioned in the "Sahih" and other books.
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar, and he recorded these additional words: "Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came in and asked: 'What do you think?' I said: 'He (peace and blessings be upon him) has fainted.' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came close to him, removed the cloth from his face and said: 'Alas, what a faint! If only this faint had come over me!' He removed the cloth from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and realised that he had died, and he said: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return).' Then he began to weep. I said: 'In the path of Allah, the revelation has been cut off, and Sayyiduna Jibril's (peace be upon him) coming to my house has been cut off.' Then he placed his hands on his temples and his mouth on his forehead, and wept until his tears flowed onto the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he covered the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and went out to the people while he was weeping. He said: 'O assembly of Muslims, does any of you have any word (from him) about the passing of the Messenger of Allah?' The people said: 'No.' Then he turned to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: 'O Umar, do you have any word (from him) about the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?' He replied: 'No.' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'By the One besides whom there is no god, he has tasted death, and he had said to the people: "I am going to die, and you too are going to die."' The people cried out and wept intensely. Then the people left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to his family. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) washed him, while Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) poured the water. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Whatever part of him I forgot to wash would be turned over for me, and I washed it without seeing anyone (turning it).' When they had finished, the people shrouded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a red Yemeni cloak and in two sheets that had been used; they were washed; then he was laid on the bed. Then the people were given permission to come in, and they began to come in group after group, praying for mercy for him without an imam, until there remained no one in Madinah, free or slave, who had not offered the funeral prayer for him (or prayed for mercy for him). Then the people disagreed about burying the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): where should he be buried? Someone said: 'Beside the piece of wood that he used to hold in his hand, beneath his pulpit.' Someone said: 'He should be buried in Jannat al-Baqi', where he used to bury his deceased.' Some people said: 'We will not do that, for then it would happen that whenever the master of a slave or slave girl is angry with him, that person would seek refuge at the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and this would become a custom.' Then they agreed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) should be buried in his house, beneath his very bed, where his soul had been taken. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he was buried with him. When the final hour of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) drew near, he left this instruction: 'When I die, carry my body to the door of the house of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and say to her: "This is Umar bin al-Khattab sending you greetings of peace, and he is asking: shall I come in, or go away?"' Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) remained silent for a while, then she said: 'Bring him in and bury him with them.' (The narrator says:) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is on the right of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is on his left. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had been buried there, I would wrap myself in an outer cloak (when entering the chamber). The narrator says: Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked: 'Why did you wrap yourself in the cloak?' She said: 'Before, there was my husband, and one was my father; when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was buried, I began to wrap myself in the cloak.'" The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy). In the chain of Abu Ya'la there is a narrator, Uwayd bin Abi Imran, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) and the majority declared da'if (weak); some said: He is matruk (abandoned).
