Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) (that is, Imam Zayn al-Abidin) narrates: I heard my father say: "Before the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him and said: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty has sent me to you to honour you, to show your excellence, and especially for you, so that I may ask you about something which the Lord knows better than you. He says: How do you feel?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Jibril, I feel distressed; O Jibril, I feel in hardship.' When the third day came, Sayyiduna Jibril descended, and the Angel of Death descended with him, and with the two of them was an angel who was in the air, whose name was Isma'il. He was over seventy thousand angels, each of whom was over another seventy thousand angels, and they had come with Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him). Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty has sent me to you to honour you, to show your excellence, and especially for you, so that I may ask you about something which the Lord knows better than you. He is saying: How do you feel?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Jibril, I feel grieved; O Jibril, I feel distressed.' The narrator says: Then the Angel of Death asked permission at the door to come in. Sayyiduna Jibril said: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), this is the Angel of Death asking your permission. He has never asked permission of any human before you, and he will never ask permission of anyone after you.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Give him permission.' Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) gave him permission. He came forward and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: 'O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty has sent me to you, and He has commanded me to obey you in whatever you command me. If you command me to take your soul, I will take it, and if you dislike it, I will leave it.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'O Angel of Death, will you really do so?' He said: 'Yes, I have been commanded to obey you in whatever you instruct me.' Sayyiduna Jibril said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Allah Almighty is longing to meet you.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Carry out what you have been commanded.' Then Sayyiduna Jibril said to him: 'This is my last time coming down to the earth; in this world my business was only with you.' When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, something came to offer condolence; its arrival could be sensed and its sound was felt, but its form could not be seen. It said: 'Peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah Almighty. Every soul shall taste death. Indeed, with Allah Almighty alone is consolation for every calamity, and from Allah Almighty there is a replacement for everyone who perishes, and a recompense for everything that is lost. So place your trust in Allah Almighty and hope for reward from Him, for the truly afflicted one is he who is deprived of the reward. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah Almighty.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Maymun al-Qaddah, and he is dhahib al-hadith (his narrations are discarded).
