Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Angel of Death came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and asked permission to come in. The head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the lap of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings)." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Go back, for we are busy right now and cannot attend to you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Hasan, do you know who this is? This is the Angel of Death." (Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:) "Come in, rightly guided." When he came in, he said: "Your Lord sends you greetings of peace." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is Jibril?" He said: "He is not near me; he will come shortly." Then the Angel of Death went out, until Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him), standing at the door, asked him: "O Angel of Death, why have you come out?" He said: "Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is asking for you." When the two of them had sat down, Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "Peace be upon you, O Abu al-Qasim; this is a farewell from me and from you." The narrator says: It has reached me that the Angel of Death did not greet anyone with peace before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he will not greet anyone with peace after him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Mukhtar bin Nafi', and he is da'if (weak).
