Reports on silk and gold

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Silk in this world is worn only by one who does not hope to wear it in the Hereafter; silk is worn by one who will have no share (in the Hereafter)." Hasan al-Basri says: What is wrong with people? This has reached them from their Prophet, and yet they include silk in their clothes and also use it in their homes.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form. Its chain contains a narrator, Mubarak bin Fadalah, whom Ibn Hibban and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), though there is weakness in him. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would search out the silk in clothing and remove it.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Abu Sa'id al-Ghifari, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, Utarid al-Tamimi is selling a silk suit (hullah). If you were to buy it and wear it when delegations of people come to you (that would be fitting)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Silk is worn only by one who will have no share (in the Hereafter)."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded something similar. The narrators of Imam Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).

Habib bin Ubayd al-Rahbi narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Umamah came to Khalid bin Yazid. Khalid placed a cushion for him. Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that it might be made of silk, so he moved back, walking backwards until he reached the end of the row. Meanwhile Khalid was talking with a man. When he turned his attention to Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "O my brother, what did you suppose? Did you think that it is silk?" Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever hopes for the Days of Allah will not take enjoyment from silk.'" Khalid asked him: "O Abu Umamah, did you yourself hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, I ask Your forgiveness! We were among a people who did not speak falsehood, nor were we ever belied."
Imam Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam, who had become confused (in his memory).

Sulayman al-Taymi narrates: Al-Hasan narrated the report of Abu Uthman al-Nahdi from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning brocade (dibaj). Then al-Hasan said: A man of the tribe told me that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that man was wearing a cloak (jubbah) whose "labinah" (the piece attached at the collar opening of a shirt or cloak) was of brocade. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is a labinah of fire."
Imam Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Asim bin Suhayb; they criticised him for his many mistakes and his persistence in them. Imam Ahmad said: "As for me, I narrate from him, and hadith have been narrated to us from him." The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A monk presented the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a cloak (jubbah) of fine silk (sundus) as a gift. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wore it; then he went home and took it off. He learned that a delegation was arriving, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) requested him to put on the cloak because the delegation was coming. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not fitting for us to wear it in this world; it will be fitting for us in the Hereafter. O Umar, you take it." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You dislike it, so should I take it?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am not telling you to wear it; rather, send it to the land of Persia and obtain wealth from it." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent that cloak to the Negus (al-Najashi), because he had treated well those companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who had gone to him.

In one narration the wording is: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) refused to take it. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is transmitted in the Sahih in abridged form.
Imam Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah; his hadith is hasan (good), though there is weakness in him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Juwayriyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wears a garment of silk in this world, Allah Almighty will one day clothe him in a garment made of fire" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) "Allah Almighty will clothe him in a garment of fire on the Day of Resurrection."

In one narration the wording is: "Whoever wears garments of silk in this world, Allah Almighty will clothe him on the Day of Resurrection in a garment of humiliation made of fire" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) "will clothe him in a garment made of fire."
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Jabir al-Ju'fi, who is da'if (weak), though he has also been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), or perhaps Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: I bear witness concerning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he forbade the wearing of silk.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: It is because of the mention of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him)
that I have included this narration here.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Whoever wears a silk garment, Allah Almighty will clothe him in a garment made of fire, and that day will not be reckoned by your days, but by the long days of Allah Almighty.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it from his teacher Raja' bin al-Jarud; I do not know him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Hisham bin Abi Ruqayyah narrates: I heard Maslamah bin Mukhallad while he was standing on the pulpit delivering a sermon to the people, saying: "O people, is there not in 'asb and linen (two particular kinds of cloth) something that makes you independent of silk? This man is present among you; he will tell you something from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Stand up, O Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him)." So Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up (the narrator says: I was listening to this myself) and stated: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever deliberately attributes a lie to me, let him prepare to enter Hell." (Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) then said:) I bear witness that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever wears silk in this world will be deprived of wearing it in the Hereafter."
Imam Ahmad, Imam Abu Ya'la, Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani (in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat) recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from the desert came to him, wearing a cloak (jubbah) of sijan (a green woollen cloth) adorned with brocade. He said: "Indeed, this companion of yours wants to bring down every horseman and raise up every shepherd who is the son of a shepherd." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the collar of that man's cloak and said: "Let me not see on you the clothing of one who has no sense."
Imam Ahmad mentioned it within a long hadith which has passed earlier in the chapter on the counsel of Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him), and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade silk and qazz (a kind of silk).
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Baqiyyah, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us wearing a cloak (jubbah) of fine silk (sundus); for a long time we had not seen any garment more beautiful than it. Then he stood up in distress and took it off. Then he came out wearing a striped Yemeni cloak (hibarah) and said: "Silk is the clothing of the people of Paradise; whoever wears it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Isa bin Bakr bin Da'b, who is extremely da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a cloak (jubbah) trimmed with silk and said: "On the Day of Resurrection this will be a collar of fire."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; Imam al-Bazzar also recorded it. The narrators of Imam al-Bazzar are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A striped silk suit (hullah siyara') was given to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift, and he sent it to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, he was wearing that suit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What I am not pleased with for myself, I will not be pleased with for you either. I did not give this to you so that you would wear it; I gave it to you so that you would have head-coverings made from it for the women named Fatimah."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, who has been declared trustworthy despite his weakness. Its remaining narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate: Some suits (hullahs) were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he sent one suit to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) brought that suit, carrying it, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, you have sent this silk suit to me, while you have already said what you said about silk?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did not send it to you so that you would wear it; rather, sell it and benefit from its price." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Something similar is transmitted in the Sahih from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and the hadith transmitted from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ahmad bin Ubaydullah al-Ibri; I do not know him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not wear silk or gold."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah; his hadith is hasan (good), though there is weakness in him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the drought has devoured us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The world will be opened up for you, and alas, my Ummah will then wear nothing but brocade (dibaj)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ubaydah bin Mu'attib, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the drought has devoured us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Something other than that is what I fear for you: that the world will be poured out upon my Ummah; and would that my Ummah did not wear silk."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator who is not named, and a narrator, al-Mas'udi, who had become confused (in his memory). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, and in his blessed hand were two pouches; in one of them was gold and in the other was silk. He said: "These two are forbidden to the men of my Ummah and lawful for the women."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Amr bin Jarir, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought out in his blessed hand a piece of gold and a piece of silk and said: "These two are forbidden to the men of my Ummah and lawful for their women."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with two chains. One of them contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki, who is da'if (weak); it has also been said of him that he is saduq (truthful) but falls into errors. The other contains a narrator, Islam al-Tawil, who is matruk (abandoned). The remaining narrators of both chains are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gold and silk are lawful for the women of my Ummah and forbidden to its (that is, my Ummah's) men."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Thabit bin Zayd bin Arqam, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade silk, except for the width of two fingers.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Amatullah bint Madh'ur narrates from her mother: I came to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was praying in a shift and a head-covering. I asked her about the markings (that is, embroidered borders) in clothes, and she said: "In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we women used to wear clothes like this." She said this about the garment she was wearing, which had silk embroidery in it.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. I do not know the woman named Amatullah or her mother. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
